  1. What’s the point of living longer if you are just going to end up with dementia? Medical science is great at keeping us alive for longer, but not so good at fending off the loss of marbles.

Leading causes of death in Australia
Ischaemic heart disease: 12pct of all deaths
    Dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease: 8.3pct
    Cerebrovascular diseases: 6.6pct
Trachea, bronchus and lung cancer: 5.3pct
    Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 5.1pct
The top five causes was unchanged from the previous year, accounting 37.3pct of all deaths
But dementia overtook heart disease to be the leading cause of death amongst women
There were 158,504 deaths overall: 81,867 males and 76,637 females

Tony Abbott says defence powers should be used to force states to approve mining projects
TONY Abbott has suggested Canberra should use the Army as a means to control Australia’s resources, and force states to increase gas exploration and supply.

I really am sick of his daily outbursts. If he wants to become PM again then he should challenge and accept what happens.

  10. Dutton tells the most outrageous lies about conditions on Manus Island and Nauru, and makes obscene allegations about refugees who have been relocated to the US. Cheered on by well-known bully and alleged wife-beater Ray Hadley.

    http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2017/09/28/peter-dutton-lays-armani-refugees-bound-us

It’s damned hard to find any photos of refugees leaving for the US, probably Dutton ordered no photos so no-one could prove he has been lying. However, some did make it to the media. The photos in this article are allegedly (no way to prove either way) men from Manus Island at Port Moresby airport.

    http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw/australiaus-refugee-deal-manus-nauru-refugees-on-their-way-to-america/news-story/55e6a42b0592c33373ec297e0c4c6e6c

  11. On the alleged energy/gas crisis –

Greg Jericho wrote this in March this year.

Fracking and coal seam gas is no solution to an energy crisis of our own making
    https://www.theguardian.com/business/grogonomics/2017/mar/21/fracking-and-coal-seam-gas-is-no-solution-to-an-energy-crisis-of-our-own-making

Nothing has really changed since then, except Turnbull and his motley crew are pushing the idea of fracking the whole country to keep foreign-owned companies making billions from exporting Australian gas,and the fruit-loop idea to import our own gas back from Japan or wherever at cheaper prices than the gas companies sold it has now become closer to really happening.

We don’t have a shortage of gas, we have a pricing problem. The Coalition is now well into its fifth year of government, and in all that time they have done nothing about energy prices or gas exports, nothing at all. Turnbull has finally summoned up enough energy to have a few talks with power companies and gas exporters, but they achieved nothing. concrete. A few promises to send electricity consumers letters telling them about alleged cheaper plans, a vague promise to make sure there is enough gas for domestic needs, that’s all. Nothing in writing. Nothing that can’t be wriggled out of with a shrug and a ‘we never promised that’.

Turnbull has manufactured an energy crisis where one doesn’t really exist simply as a way to make himself appear strong to the few supporters he has left. No-one seems to be falling for his cunning plan, except for a few devoted media types.

  12. l2

    Tony being ‘helpful’ again.

Tony Abbott says defence powers should be used to force states to approve mining projects

I think Turnbull may have been happy with this stupid outburst by Abbott.

It’s shows how ‘out there’ Abbott is.

    • Tony really is making a fool of himself. Maybe Turnbull believes in the ‘if you give him enough rope he will hang himself’ theory.

  13. l2 – Abbott attacking the ‘Gladys’ government surely must just more encouragement for the Libs to bite the bullet and dis-endorse him.

As you say the rope is only so long. I think if they did he wouldn’t make it as an indy.

  14. Abbott says there should be no politics in sport – at least, that’s what he says this week. It wasn’t always like that.

  15. https://www.itwire.com/telecoms-and-nbn/80132-launtel-launches-first-hobart-gigabit-internet.html

The introduction of gigabit internet adds a new economic driver that offers high wage employment opportunities and environmentally friendly growth.

You could cry at what the bloody Libs have done to the country and its people!

Launtel is alright but at $1000/month is for businesses only. Except that the CVC costing means Launtel’s 1Gbps has no Committed Information Rate. Cut or remove the bloody idiotic CVC ($17 per megabit per month) and 1Gbps can come down heaps. I pay $80 for a 12:1 wireless service, would LOVE to pay that for a 250:250 service! Host my own board, pictures would upload in a blink of an eye, video (movies and other entertainment but also educational films/YouTubes) and from Tassie could talk to my SA rellies and have them (almost) present as holograms.

It is going to be difficult and maybe another $20Bn but Labor MUST commit to reintroducing FTTH. They can copy the Chorus FTTH rollout in NZ.

When we suffer blackouts in the heat this coming summer just remember that ubiquitous FTTH and smart metres would have allowed sophisticated load shedding so no city or area was left blacked out for a day or more.

    So angry :{ 😦

    • With FTTH we could have cut the cost then removed any plan below 100mbps. THAT would show the peasants what REAL internet can do for them!

    • I’m a Scorpio. If you believe what astrology says that means I hold grudges. Well, life has taught me a most certainly do exactly that.

I will never forgive Turnbull for what he has done to this country. Condemning us to 20th century communications for purely political reasons is a crime of treason, in my book.

It was an indication of Turnbull’s weakness, before he even became PM, that he was so willing to go along with Abbott’s instructions to destroy the NBN. A real, strong, intelligent man would have told Abbott to get lost. Turnbull did not. Instead he simpered alongside Abbott in that dreadful press conference in April 2013.

      Just a reminder –

People say Turnbull was looking at Abbott as if he was some sort of idiot. Maybe, maybe not, but he was certainly too weak and gutless to say anything. He accepted the job. No principles whatsoever, just a complete sell-out. He did not hesitate to lie to us either.

Now we know the dreadful truth about what we have lost and what this country could have had, could have been, without Abbott and Turnbull’s treachery and lies.

      Never forget. Never forgive.

    • Yeah, I know—I read the Whirlpool NBN–Policy thread.

I don’t care what the amount is: ADSL is $30 line rental + $30–40 internet. So $80, who cares?

Yes, if turdfull had stayed on the backbench he could have knocked abbott over earlier.

How on earth does an advanced country elect a cretin like abbott?

    • None of abbott’s promises in that launch were kept, couldn’t be kept and turdbull knew that tho he pushed for FTTN & HFC even before the launch.

Basically the copper bits are a temporary network.

  16. Political Animal

Looking at those plan options hits home how much effing bulldust the crud about it being unaffordable for home consumers is. Truffles, Australia’s most costly Minister+PM. Many tens of billions up in smoke and total economic damage $100+ billion. Scum.

    • Yup, the $60Bn wasted and even worse: the opportunity cost of not having a superfast broadband network!

  17. The person who really destroyed the NBN was Kevin Rudd, with his overwhelming ambition to return as PM.

The NBN was Rudd’s idea and in doing his very best to destroy the Gillard government he also destroyed his own dream of a national high-speed broadband network.

I don’t suppose he cares at all. He’s now a resident of New York. why should he worry about the kruddy internet schemozzle he left us with.

    • Yeah, imagine at least one more term for the Gillard govt. Damn Rudd, damn abbott & turdfull. I abstained and paid my $20 fine in 2013.

  18. leonetwo

I actually blame John Howard. In the early 2000s Telstra brought out a report saying the copper network was nearing the end of life and fibre was the future. I did not realise the importance of broadband back in those days so did not take close notice. I did however notice Howard and Alston stymieing several moves in the broadband/fibre direction. Truly an inspiration for the effing Abbott.

    • I remember that. There were claims the copper network was all but dead and needed replacing with optical fibre, but Howard wouldn’t have it.

  19. I have to say the complaint about the delay in deductions from your account also applies to anyone who uses a debit card with any bank, not just the Indue card. I do all my shopping with a debit card, I know that it can take a while for things to appear online in my bank account. It’s no big deal to make a note of what you had in your account and then deduct what you have spent, so you always know what you have left. It’s just basic management of your finances,

The whole idea of income management stinks. Labor has already said they have no problems with the Indue card but would only roll it out in places where ‘the community’ wants it. What they meant by ‘the community’ was not explained. If they mean local councils they can shove their damned roll-out where the sun don’t shine. Don’t ever expect Labor to get rid of this horrible control, they extended the trial when they were last in government.

  20. Pauline Hanson gets what she wants – again. It’s a mark of the Turnbull government’s weakness that they keep on caving in to this creature.

“This was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy.“ Ezekiel 16:49
The sin of Sodom is greatly misunderstood by those who usually choose to do so, it has nothing to do with homosexuality, it is all about hospitality, or more to the point lack there of, and particularly about the condition of the heart that leads to inhospitable behaviour.
Peter Dutton’s comments today are an astonishingly vivid example of this most grievous of sins. The lies, misinformation and blatant untruths are worthy of noting less than condemnation and ridicule.

“They’re economic refugees, they got on a boat, paid a people smuggler a lot of money, and somebody once said to me that we’ve got the world’s biggest collection of Armani jeans and handbags up on Nauru waiting for people to collect it when they depart,” Dutton told 2GB radio. https://www.theguardian.com/…/peter-dutton-lets-fly-at-arma…

Dutton claimed many of those who ended up in the island camps had not come from war-ravaged areas but were instead seeking economic advantage. They had received “an enormous amount of support” from Australian taxpayers for a long time.

Yes Mr Dutton we have spent billions of taxpayer dollars incarceration innocent people where they have been raped, beaten, tortured and murdered. You seem to think they should somehow be grateful to us. This is the psyche of the sociopath and abuser.

Could the Minister for Immigration be so willfully ignorant that he is unaware that many refugees, especially Iranians are from the middle class? These are the people most at risk of persecution in an oppressive regime. Such regimes cannot allow the educated populace any freedom at all lest they begin to make trouble. Yes they can afford to pay people smugglers; yes they have mobile phones and even Armani sunglasses, everyone with a modicum of understanding knows that this is more likely to support their refugee claims than to diminish them.

Unless, of course, you are a sodomite; someone who has no compassion, no capacity to love the stranger, the persecuted, the outcast or the homeless.

The biblical judgment on the Sodomites was of biblical proportions. This is because such a society cannot, in the long term survive. Because of its lack of compassion it will eventually turn in on itself and be destroyed from within.

I do truly hope Peter Dutton is not representative of the average Australian, if he is we are all doomed.

Because Dutton is a true Sodomite.

  22. And some people over the road still defend the rat, and laud his wonderfulness while denigrating FPM Julia Gillard.

At least I can acknowledge the mistakes she made, and her positions I disagreed with and the things I did not like. For me, the good overwhelmingly outweighed the negatives.and I was spending so much time and energy fighting the misogyny that credible discussions about those areas were not possible, over the road or anywhere for that matter.

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-09-28/victorian-greens-leader-greg-barber-quits-parliament-immediately/8997594

I guess I feel somewhat pleased about this. Barber has been one of those Greens that would rather play nasty politics than stick up for party principle. I won’t say I’ll miss him, it’s his Greens that voted a Liberal party speaker for the Victorian Legislative Council over a Labor one for instance. In my opinion he acted more like a Democrat that was bitter that the party died before Victoria changed its upper house voting methods that would have made it possible for Democrat MLC’s to be elected.

I wonder who would be in line to replace him?

  24. Kurdistan – what the referendum is hiding

    by Thierry Meyssan

In a world where images count more than realities, the Press is presenting us with a democratic referendum for the independence of Iraqi Kurdistan. However, despite the fact that, constitutionally speaking, this referendum should be held throughout Iraq, and not only in the independentist zone, several million non-Kurdish voters have already been ejected from their homes and will never be able to return. In the polling stations, only the independentists will be supervising the legality of the vote. Thierry Meyssan reveals this fraud and the interests it is hiding.

The referendum for the independence of Kurdistan is a fool’s game. The United States, which secretly supports it, claims in public to oppose it. France and the United Kingdom are doing the same, hoping that Washington will make their old dreams come true. Not to be outdone, Russia is hinting that although it is against any unilateral change, it might support independence… as long as everyone accepts the independence of Crimea, which means accepting its attachment to Moscow.

The degree of hypocrisy of the permanent members of the UN Security Council is such that they have so far been unable to give a ruling on this question, despite their apparent unanimity. They have not adopted any resolution (in other words, a text with international force of law), nor Presidential declaration (in other words a position common to the members of the Council) – nothing except an insipid Press release during their meeting on 19 September [1].

Currently, there exist eight non-recognised States – Abkhazia, North Cyprus, Nagorno-Karabagh, Kosovo, Ossetia, Western Sahara, Somaliland and Trasnistria. Two European regions are also hoping for independence – Catalonia and Scotland. Any modification of the status of Iraqi Kurdistan will have consequences for these ten countries.

Syria’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Walid Muallem has stated that once the conflict against terrorist groups is finished in Syria, Damascus will be willing to politically negotiate internal autonomy for Syrian Kurds.

Reuters quotes Muallem, who delivered Syria’s address to the United Nations, as stating,

“This topic (Kurdish autonomy) is open to negotiation and discussion and when we are done eliminating Daesh (aka ISIS), we can sit with our Kurdish sons and reach an understanding on a formula for the future”.

There are several geo-political implications to this statement.

    1. Seizing the initiative from the US occupiers

First and foremost, Muallem’s proposals take the wind out of the sails of the United States. As I wrote previously in The Duran, with Syria and Russia quickly securing control over areas east of the River Euphrates, the US is being squeezed out of Syria.

  26. Quite an interesting piece of artwork that depicts the face of the Trump Administration.

Title something like “I’ll uh have to get back to you on that one”.

Unfortunately artist unknown, but somehow I can picture this image on a US banknote in the future going from what that country is heading toward.

  27. Kirsdarke

A bit like Trump thinking suggesting his dial should be on the back of US coins now.

No understanding of the role of a US President. He thinks he’s a monarch.

    • The scariest thing about it is wondering if one day Trump decides to cease being President and instead assume his new title, affirmed by the God of the Evangelicals as “King Donald I of America”, there may be little to stop him. If bad luck prevails on the part of the supreme court where the judges opposed to eternal Conservative rule end up dying and Trump ends up appointing disastrous members to replace them, the damage may not able to be repaired in this lifetime.

  28. VIETNAM WAR: The Critical Role of Russian Weapons and Supplies

To get a sense of how viciously the Vietnam War was fought and – more importantly – the sweeping nature of Vietnamese victory, chew on this: during the conflict the Americans lost more than 2,000 aircraft; the Vietnamese lost just 131 planes.

This astounding record notched up by the Vietnamese against a superpower with virtually unlimited military resources – and which could also count on combat support from allies such as Australia, South Korea and New Zealand – was possible because of the almost superhuman fight put by the Vietnamese military and civilians.

  34. Tony keeping politics out of sport.

Let’s not forget all the times he rorted his expenses to compete in triathlons and surf events around the county.

And what about the now infamous Pollie Pedal? For over 20 years Abbott has been claiming expenses (as have many of his fellow riders) to indulge in a sporting event that probably raises less for charities than the riders claim in expenses. Abbott makes sure he gives a brief presser about nothing every day of this ride, just so he can claim it all as ‘official business’.

Then there was the time in the 2013 election campaign when he had his daughter, Bridget, play a bit of netball with some schoolgirls, just for the cameras, as a political stunt.

Keeping politics entwined with sport is an Abbott tradition.

  35. From Gippsland Laborite last night:

    http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/programs/hack/same-sex-marriage-troll-enrages-yes-campaign-then-vanishes/8998282

I posted on that Facebook thread. But only because I’d taken a minute out of my time to establish that this ‘Marta Hemming’ had already posted something elsewhere denigrating gays, and to suggest people stop falling for it. I noticed yesterday that it had disappeared.

Just another tactic from the No group. They’ve moved on now to whining about Macklemore and putting together their own robocall campaign. I’m not sure exactly what their rollout plan of stunts is, but looks to be about every third day.

    • I saw that Facebook post the other day, my daughter-in-law had commented on it. I thought it was dodgy, especially the ‘caring for my dying mother’ thing. I just ignored it. My daughter-in-law is delightful, but she does tend to fall for every scam and con going. Just as well she really let fly at ‘Marta’.

When someone pops up on Facebook with no ‘friends’ and no previous posts and starts whining about something important then you know it’s fake.

  36. The AEC’s response to my e-mail

The AEC is aware of the leaflet and has raised concerns about the authorisation details on such leaflets with Mr Lyle Shelton of the Coalition for Marriage. Mr Shelton has indicated that the Coalition for Marriage began work on its national campaign immediately following the Federal Government’s announcement on 8 August 2017 that it would conduct a postal survey on changing the definition of marriage. The Coalition for Marriage had apparently arranged for printing and distribution of campaign brochures before the Marriage Law Survey (Additional Safeguards) Act 2017 (Safeguards Act) was introduced and passed by the Parliament on 13 September 2017.

Mr Shelton has provided an assurance that from the date of the commencement of the Safeguards Act (14 September 2017), all printed material produced by the Coalition for Marriage has complied with the necessary legislative requirements.

Given that the purpose of the Safeguards Act is to prevent anonymous advertising about the survey and those details do appear on the website site referred to in the leaflet, the AEC does not propose to take any action at this time.

So it’s OK for Shelton to put leaflets in letterboxes knowing that they contravene legislation.

I got mine on 24 September.

    • Exactly what you’d expect. Certain persons are exempt from the rules.

Just image the fire and brimstone that would descend on any ‘Yes’ campaign material that was not properly authorised.
