  1. TLBD re manual or automatic cars.

Modern car engines are designed with an automatic gearbox, (well the 1990 2 litre Toyota Camry was). When the customer orders a manual car the gearbox/engine is modified even though marketing charges you extra for an auto

Anecdotally I notice that drivers over 50 have often lost their timing on gear changes and change gears too early or too late

    • Hybrid cars have auto gearboxes
I have driven a Prius and I can’t see how its technology would work with a manual car

  2. My son in England hired a modern car for us to drive Bath; it was not only automatic, it sensed the cars ahead and adjusted speed accordingly. Driving in traffic was a breeze and even on the open road, my son said it reduced the urge to overtake because of the smooth ride without manually adjusting speed all the time.

I do not know what it is called but if I could buy a new car I would want that tech for sure.

  3. Puffy

    It’s called –

‘COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST’ – it uses radar to measure the distance between your car and the one in front and adjusts speed and applies the brakes if necessary..

It’s often combined with a system that stops you wandering out of your lane on multi-lane roads.

    • J6P! Stop gloating, it’s rude to laugh at the poor people down south in freezing conditions with a wind straight off Antarctica

Thank you very much. I actually got it on my fb. You couldn’t think of anything more adorable than that. It’s also quite amusing how the mum has to put up with little bites and spikes. I believe it’s a Russian cat which made some say “only the slavs”. That’s not true, of course.

  4. I’ve decided to post these vids as soon as available, I’ll still post them for the Sunday morning extravaganza but hopefully we will beat the disappearing link issue for good –

  5. If they can’t manage a mailing list how can they manage government?

Former senators and MPs still on the mailing list, some over a year after leaving parliament, and being sent sensitive information, but poor old Kevin Andrewqs is not on the email list.

Has Cory been leaking to the media?

Cory Bernardi Is Still On The Liberal Party’s Internal Mailing List, Six Months After He Quit The Party
Exclusive: BuzzFeed News can reveal Cory Bernardi has been receiving confidential Liberal Party emails for six months.

A copy of an email sent by chief government whip Nola Marino to all Liberal Party MPs and senators on Thursday informing them of Monday’s emergency party room meeting on same-sex marriage has been leaked to BuzzFeed News.

It shows Bernardi is still on the Liberal Party mailing list and has been receiving confidential emails about internal party planning, speaking lists and talking points, despite defecting from the party in February

Bernardi’s parliamentary email remained the same after he quit the Liberals to sit on the Senate crossbench.

  6. I admit that I’m a little worried about how next week might go in regards to the marriage equality debate. I mean, now that I’ve returned to university, I was hoping to maybe reach out to other LGBTIQ individuals and possibly join the relevant group.

Doing so in the same period where Turnbull’s government may very well bring on a postal plebiscite that may bring on a result in which the majority votes against SSM and brings forth a whole bunch of other consequences, people constantly saying on the news that “The majority of Australians don’t care for you degenerates so frankly you should be grateful we allow you to exist and don’t beat you up on the streets like we did 50 years ago”.

It’s daunting, but, I realize that there’s those younger than me that would be much more scared about it than I am. So, I think I might put my head out there to support those in my university affected by this debate.

At least, if the worst happens, Turnbull arranges for an optional postal plebiscite, that plebiscite results in a majority voting against marriage equality, and Shorten simply declares that result illegitimate and enables SSM when he wins anyway. But I do lament the horrible, depressing path to that moment that LGBTIQ people will have to endure in the meantime.

    • The postal plebiscite won’t be compulsory, so if we are saddled with it I’m not going to vote I’ll maybe just write something critical on the ballot paper and send it back. OR I might just bin it.

It’s a pointless, idiotic idea,a total waste of money, just more delaying tactics while this hopeless, divided farce of a government flails around looking for any excuse to not have a vote. The only thing working in it’s favour is Dutton wants it and he might have enough dirt on individual government pollies to be able to ‘persuade’ (blackmail) them to vote for it. PvO is sure the party room will vote for the postal option, he’s been talking about it on Sky for days. I really hope he’s wrong and this idea is thrown out.

Good on you for deciding to be supportive. Some young students are going to be in for a tough time if this daft idea gets up. This country does not deserve weeks of vile propaganda and persecution just because Turnbull is too weak to demand the right-wing bigots and haters in his government either shut up or resign.

    • This is what happens when religion and politics get all mixed in together. I would hate to be a young person unsure of my sexuality and have this being used as a way to cause more distress. I don’t believe in marriage for anyone, but if someone wishes to get married they should be allowed to. This is just causing so much unnecessary mental pain and trauma for a lot of people. If you can join a group to support I’m sure it would be appreciated.

  7. Kharma, “bro”…

Shkreli made headlines in September 2015 when as CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals he raised the price of Daraprim, a drug used to treat a parasitic infection, by more than 5,000%, earning him the nickname “pharma bro.” The charges in this trial weren’t related to that price hike but stemmed from events earlier in his career while he managed hedge funds.

    • I’ve only seen a couple of Jonathon Pie’s videos, but I like his style.

Why isn’t there an Aussie version? There’s plenty of material to call “bullshit!” on.

    • Who needs the MSM? Pie (Tom Walker in real life) became a sensation without the help of the MSM.

Some media people are so dumb they didn’t even realise Pie is a fictional character.

  12. Fitz sure did give Shorten a thumbs up.

All up, though, he looked less like a politician working a room than a proud Australian having the time of his life. And of course, in his singularly eloquent and passionate speech……………but I cannot overstate how impressive Shorten was overall, and just how likeable he was.

    • That’s the first time the MSM have described Shorten as likeable instead of just a union apparatchik
Many of those who complain Shorten married above himself signal their approval of entrenched privilege denying the idea that able people can reach their ability ie denying meritocracy

    • Shorten went to Xavier a school renowned for churning out lawyers doctors etc, he studied Law at Monash then completed an MBA at Melbourne

Who do you prefer to be Prime Minister
      – an able well educated son of single teacher mother and waterside worker who spent his earlier career getting better deals for his union members
      – an able well educated scion of millionaire mother and real estate hotel broker single father who has spent his working life making slippery deals to increase his considerable wealth

Although tomorrow night the choice might be between
      – Shorten
      – a former Qld plod from the sex crimes unit who has built an impressive real estate portfolio while locking up refugees and throwing away the key

  14. kk – the landscape of the peninsula is striking when viewed on Google satellite.

  16. Being conveniently overlooked in all the MSM carry-on about Turnbull’s emergency meeting on same sex marriage –

One Nation uses ABC as bargain chip for media reform

Pauline Hanson’s One Nation will demand a spending review of the ABC and SBS in exchange for supporting the government’s media reform package.

Parliamentary debate on the media reforms, which have unanimous industry backing, is scheduled to resume next Wednesday as the government struggles to win over enough crossbenchers to pass the bill through the Senate.

Nick Xenophon, who leads a crucial bloc of three crossbenchers in the upper house, plans to put a final “compromise” proposal to his colleagues early next week in a bid to end the Senate stalemate but the Coalition needs the support of either One Nation or the Greens for the legislation to succeed.

Senator Hanson, an outspoken critic of the ABC, said her team of four senators wanted the public broadcasters “reined in” and a review of their expenses, wages and whether the number of channels should be reduced.

“They’re actually overstepping the mark on their charter,” Senator Hanson said. “That’s detrimental and causing problems for commercial stations paying huge licence fees. I don’t think it’s in the public interest,” she said.

One Nation has repeatedly said it would not support the media reforms while the bill repealed the so-called two-out-of-three ownership rule, which prevents a person controlling a television network, radio station and newspaper in the same market. The measure is also the major sticking point for the Greens and Labor.

“The government needs to convince (One Nation) it won’t have an impact on the diversity in our media market, that international players won’t take our media and turn it into their mouthpiece,” Senator Hanson’s spokesman said.

“It’s got to be a diverse media and there are concerns from Pauline about Rupert Murdoch (executive chairman of News Corp, publisher of The Australian) taking control of the bulk of our free-to-air media in this country.”

Communications Minister Mitch Fifield acknowledged Senate colleagues were talking to the government about the overhaul.

“As has been the case for the life of this Senate, it is independent and minor party colleagues who are prepared to constructively engage. The media reform package would represent a shot in the arm for Australian media voices,” he said.

Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie said she would await the outcome from crossbench negotiations before committing to the package

    http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/media/broadcast/one-nation-uses-abc-as-bargain-chip-for-media-reform/news-story/f10bd1ae7b04f7e48a91e8cc8d1f3519

On the Senate program for Wednesday, according to an email from The Australia Institute.

  17. kk – I had a look around Akaroa via google street including back streets.

Very tidy indeed. Obviously lots of attention to what the place looks like and in particular that driving is needed – lots of street parking spots near commercial premises etc.

    • No thanks! I don’t want some goon at Centrelink knowing what I spend my money on, which, I would say, is the real purpose of this.

If the government can’t force everyone onto a cashless welfare card then they will keep track of their online spending and cut payments if they suspect someone is being frivolous, buying booze or just eating too well.

It’s too Big Brother for me.

    • If one is on unemployment benefits, it is a lot easier to log on and deal with the reporting aspect via computer. It is a huge saving in time and petrol instead of reporting at the office, though I have done that when they are playing silly buggers on occasion.
But my “job Service Provider” was most surprised when I refused to add the job search link to the “my.gov” portal and was seemingly unaware that adding any service was optional.

And I don’t know why the MSM have only just discovered the concept of shopping online or any of the other things mentioned in that article … one would think that they have not been paying attention to the world in the last 20 years or so! *mock surprise*

  18. leonetwo

It does not specifically mention Centrelink/ welfare “clients” so everyone ? Check out the shit they will track. Very Big Brother.

Data theft ? hey what a star performer when it comes IT this mob are eh ?

“It could mean a person is able to update their address, buy groceries and stream their favourite shows under a single account.
“Right now, you might have 10, 20, or 30 different logons across different websites, (like) the Department of Human services, banks, telecommunications and the state government,’’

    • As the latest government IT debacles demonstrate they are unable to supply the technology to provide reliable secure and robust access I imagine this brain fart will die away due to low adoption rates.

The Liberals live in La La land if they think the average citizen has confidence in their technical competence.
Try to access Netflix on a winter Saturday or Sunday night or submit your tax return via the MyGov portal or negotiate with Human Services via its Centrelink or Medicare portal.
We have seen the Minister for Social Services Alan Tudge vindictively dump confidential material about private individuals in the media in the case of Duncan Storrer and blogger Andie Fox

    • myGov has been trying to make me use a mobile log-in code for ages, and I keep on using the password and secret question rigmarole. Why? Because I want to.

You get a new code sent to your mobile every time you want to log in. They will not allow you to use a landline number. What do people do if they don’t have a mobile phone? Lots of oldies don’t.

Why does the government need to know what groceries you buy online? Why do they need to know what programs I stream?

A cheery thought from the website –
“All access to your myGov account is monitored”

  19. From a societal point of view I would have thought it was less expensive and less invasive for the developing foetus to be genetically tested then aborted if carrying a disease like cystic fibrosis. I don’t know whether foetus can be tested effectively and I understand that IVF is expensive and quite an emotional roller coaster as hormone levels are manipulated to produce eggs and fertilise them.

The couple opted to have their embryos screened for cystic fibrosis using a procedure known as pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and conceived a healthy baby Angus, now six.

Mrs Turton said the technology was a “huge relief” but also came at a high price as the procedure, which can add up to $6000 to an IVF cycle, is not funded by Medicare.

    http://www.smh.com.au/national/health/the-ultimate-in-preventative-treatment-push-for-government-to-fund-genetic-testing-20170804-gxpazi.html

    • Getting pregnant on ivf and then terminating would be devastating. Testing the foetus also opens up a can of worms.
Parents have got false positives, deciding to keep the pregnancy and going on to have a baby with not a thing wrong with it.

I assume the reverse can happen.

People living with disability from genetic conditions are not exactly thrilled that if they were conceived now they would not have been born.

for example Is Downs Syndrome so terrible, as long as there are social supports in place (which there are not enough)? I know a couple who went ahead after a positive result and now have a much-loved Downs daughter. They are in the allied health sector, one is a physio and they earn enough to afford the supports.

I have also seen a child who drained all the resources and exhausted the mother (fathers leave the mother of such a child in greater rates than other families) so other children suffered.

Then we get into the grey area of what is a deformity that calls for termination, parents wanting to abort a foetus with only a missing hand? What if only perfection will do, kind of like a Fox female presenter line-up? What if we miss out on a Nobel Science Award contender because she had a problem detected in the womb?

But would I want to see an under-resourced family pushed over the edge or a family not able or wanting to cope if they do not have to? No.

It is a minefield and I can see why screening the embryos is a good idea, better before than later.

It is only a decision that parents can make, for themselves, their family and the foetus.

I see older parents wanting their severely disabled adult kids to die before they do because of lack of certainty to their future living arrangements.

That as a society is our fault, and it should never happen. We cannot have a nuclear family, mobile workforce and uncertain social conditions and expect people to raise children with needs and look after them for life without government-supplied support for the family and the kids when reaching adulthood. It is not as if the village all pitches in anymore.

I want some of my taxes to be spent on this so financial and social cost is not in the equation as it must be now.
