I said I would not be wearing a thong!

Is that a way of breaking it to them you will be in your birthday suit ? 😆

  2. Re BK’s debut (?) as an artist’s model:
This reminds me of the (apochcrypal) conversation at a party when a gushing socialite asked a prominent artist would he paint her in the nude. He replied certainly Madam, but do you mind if I keep my socks on, I need somewhere to stick the brushes.

  8. Grandson came home from secondary school and said they saw one of those creepy clowns in town. Police are picking them up and charging them for carrying knives etc. Apparently they discussed in class, saying how it frightens small kids and older people. I guess many of the teenagers would be a bit shaky about it too, but wouldn’t admit it.

  9. I caught the last fifteen minutes or so of Q and A last night.

I doubt if I have ever heard such a loud-mouthed, arrogant know-all as Jim Moylan.

  10. Jim Molan –
” ….. if you go to Nauru you will find the most extraordinary medical facilities that most Australian towns will give their right arm for”.

OK then. lets have a look at what’s on offer in some Australian towns.

But first, just so we can all get ready to saw off our right arms, here’s Nauru’s hospital.
    This is the entrance.

    Here’s something inside.

But to be fair Australia has recently spent a lot of money on a new ward. It cost us $26 million dollars and is supposed to be better than facilities in many rural towns in Australia, according to Dutton and his henchgoons. And Molan. Let’s see.

Here’s a ward, part of the ‘extraordinary medical facilities’ Molan says are there. Has he ever visted?

    Now for the Aussie stuff.

This is Wauchope hospital, your typical Australian country town facility. It is used only for emergency and day surgery now, and for housing patients who are in need of bed rest, or are waiting for transfer to aged care. It has just opened a new operating theatre.

This is Kempsey hospital, currently undergoing an $81.9 million redevelopment. I had my cataract surgery in the new part a few months ago, it is exceptional.

On completion, the Kempsey District Hospital redevelopment will deliver:
an expanded emergency department and emergency medical unit
an integrated community care centre and selected clinical support services
    a medical imaging department
an acute inpatient unit and expanded high dependency and coronary care unit
operating theatres and an expanded day surgery unit
major expansion of renal dialysis services and a new renal training unit
major expansion of oral health services
investment in and expansion of primary health care and community services
    new and reconfigured parking

    http://www.nswnationals.org.au/first_look_inside_81_9_million_kempsey_hospital_redevelopment

When you compare what Kempsey got for $81.9 million, and what Nauru got for $26 million you have to ask where the money spent on Nauru really went.

Are we all feeling jealous of Nauru yet?

    • I reckon Nauru was a good little earner for delivering crap facilities and services. I thonk you will refugee welfare at the bottom of the priority list, if there at all.

Note the faces of the other panel members, especially Janine Perrett.

  13. The plebiscite is dead

Labor kill off same-sex marriage plebiscite

Labor politicians have officially decided to block plebiscite legislation, effectively killing off the public vote on same-sex marriage.

MPs and Senators met at Parliament House a short time ago, where they voted to block the bill put forward by the Coalition.

The Coalition is still expected to introduce the legislation, despite lacking the numbers in the Senate. Greens and key crossbenchers also opposed the public vote.

I’ll bring you more details as they come to hand.

    • I particularly enjoyed his list of things Mal has been ‘unambiguous’ about – unambiguous on both sides.

  14. PvO, a minute or so ago, on what he’s going to talk about in his program – wtte “Trump was yesterday, that’s over, there’s too much going on here to be bothered about what Trump said.”

I very much agree. There’s so much going on today, and so much happening this week that we should be looking at, and yet all we get is Trump.

    Essential: everything’s coming up Labor
Labor is doing well across most states, according to Essential Research. And voters have rejected the claim that renewables are to blame for the SA blackout.
    Bernard Keane — Politics Editor

Labor’s vote is buoyant across most states and federally even as Malcolm Turnbull arrests a worrying slide in his approval rating, today’s Essential Report shows.

The Prime Minister’s approval rating reached a nadir in the immediate aftermath of the election, and he remains in negative territory, but the eight-point net disapproval rating in September has shrunk to just three points, with 38% of voters approving of his performance and 41% disapproving. Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has continued to mark time in the same position as he has been in for months, with 37% of voters approving of his performance and 40% disapproving, compared to 36%-41% in September. There’s been little shift on preferred prime minister: Turnbull leads Shorten 41% to 28%.

Labor’s primary vote at the federal level is on 36%; the Coalition’s vote is down two points to 38%, and the Greens are up two points to 10%; One Nation and NXT remain on 6% and 3% respectively, for a two-party preferred outcome of 52%-48% in Labor’s favour.

Essential: ‘concerns’ about Aussie Muslims are falling despite bigots
Voters are concerned about Muslims and think there are far more in Australia than there really are. But things have improved since 2011.
    Bernard Keane — Politics Editor

Australians wildly overestimate the number of Muslim Australians and say they are concerned about them — but less so than five years ago — this week’s Essential Report shows, suggesting that the efforts of bigots to whip up Islamophobia may not be as successful as they seem.

  17. PvO again, commenting on the soon to happen Baird presser –
“That’s the podium Baird will crawl up to and where he will eat a whole lot of humble pie’.

Kristina Keneally has tweeted all Mike Baird’s earlier comments on his ban on greyhound racing, for those who are interested. too many to post – there are about 14. It will be very entertaining watching him take all that back.

  18. Has anyone seen polling for the ACT election..?

I’m not confident that ALP can maintain govt – from what I’ve heard on local radio, there is much angst in the community about land deals and the light rail, West Basin development… The natural tendency of Canberrans to vote ALP (“don’t trust the Libs/Public Sector town) may not get the ALP over the line..

Maybe with our Hare-clarke system and expanded assembly numbers and extra electorates for this election, the numbers are not reliable..?

  19. Who would ever have thought a Mike Baird/Troy Grant presser would be a wonderful opportunity for a drinking game.

if I’d known I’d have stocked up on gin.

A drink every time Baird says I got it wrong, a drink every time Grant says ‘We have listened’ and I’d have been comatose withing fifteen minutes.

It’s still going. Baird is doing a most excellent impersonation of a deflated balloon, Grant looks like a zombie – well, that’s just normal for him.

A very cheeky journalist asked of Baird “You have always said you are a conviction politician. Is it goo to be relieved of that burden?” Ouch!

I look forward to Baird and Grant also doing a presser on their backflip on forced council amalgamations, and their backflip on destroying NSW TAFE, and their backflip on turning Sydney into a high-rise jungle. I think I’ll be waiting a long, long time.

Funny how the Nats can get all fired up over greyhounds (animal cruelty was another frequent mention) but couldn’t give a toss about rural people being denied a TAFE education. Also funny what a looming by-election loss in what has always been an ultra-safe National electorate can do for backflip prowess. The NIS might like to consider that as part of their gymnastics training.

    • We all know his Plan B is to Blame Labor, but I guess he can’t state that outright at a presser.

He called Katherine Murphy his ‘interrogator’ when she asked him about it. Pretty silly, considering she’s always been fairly pro-Turnbull in her coverage.

  20. Marles is an certifiable idiot… from the Guardian live blog. Full story is in the Australian. google Paul-keating-lets-fly-at-labor-over-south-china-sea…

Paul Keating has slammed Labor defence spokesman Richard Marles for saying that the government must authorise the military to determine freedom of navigation operations in the South China Sea to defend Australia’s interest and send a clear message to China.

The former prime minister has also expressed concern that Labor is too compliant in its attitude towards US naval interests in the Pacific rather than adopting a more independent outlook that better balanced strategic and economic priorities.

Mr Keating told The Australian that Mr Marles’s comments “if reported correctly, were shocking to hear from a Labor spokesman”.

“A decision to sail a naval vessel through a disputed area in which we know there is a risk of conflict with the forces of another power — large or small — is one which should only ever be taken by the elected government in the full awareness of the circumstances at the time.”

    • Keating is absolutely right and Marles is a dead loss to Labor. He has been hopeless in the Immigration and Border Protection shadow portfolio and really, he had no business making comments on what is more a defence and foreign affairs topic on which he probably has not been briefed.

Marles and that other dead loss David Feeney, hang on because both of them are close friends of Shorten. Sometimes a friend really should take a hard decision and tell his mates to bugger off.

ejames posted the story about Marles’ statement the other night. The local MSM didn’t mention it. They missed an opportunity to Labor-bash. That’s a bit odd.

  21. I watched Question Time for a bit, but I couldn’t stand more than 10 minutes.

God the Member for Chisholm behind the PM is creepy.

  22. Angybee – The ACT Election.

I think my final decision on it is to draw a penis on my ballot paper.

  23. Michelle Rowlands – someone needs to show the lady how to lower her vocal tone a notch or three when speaking in parliament to avoid that annoying squeaky noise.

  24. Yeah, Question Time, what a schemozzle for Turnbull. The way he talks about those Medicare texts, you’d be forgiven for thinking they were a terrorist act. He was threatening to jail people at one point today. Apparently pensioners were dropping dead from the shock or something. He went the full hyperbole on that one. And on the NBN he was even less convincing; he hauled out his laptop to answer one question, along with making the misleading claim that the ALP were rolling out the NBN for their entire 6 years in office. The other question he couldn’t answer and didn’t look like he wanted to either. Poor, poor performance.

Morrison got asked about the increasing budget deficit and what on earth’s going on with it, and his response was to say the ALP have displayed a lot of “arrogance and hubris”. Which is kind of odd because he didn’t get around to saying why they shouldn’t. Watching a Treasurer answer everything with a fact-free diatribe is disconcerting, to say the least. Even Hockey tried to include figures now and then.

    • Scott’s trying to emulate Eleventy. Hoping to be made Ambassador for Somewhere.

    • There’s this other bloke in the US who keeps wanting to jail people too. Is Fizza looking to him for inspiration?

  25. Angry Bee – ACT election

I think it may be very close. Maybe 2 seats each for Labor and Libs in most of the 5 electorates? Can the Greens get up more than candidate? Good reason to use those preferences. Used to be dismisive of Hare-Clarke (“hare-brained) as democracy on steroids, but I now like it.

The (apparent?) opposition to the tram line confuses me. If we are going to have one, there has never been a better time to do it – and with population growth etc it makes good sense to me. In terms of long-term planning it make sense and appeals to me.

Not a big personal fan of opinion polls – tend to see them as just another rather unnecessary industry that by and large fuels speculation and media talk.

In 42 years here, I’ve never had so many candidates knock in person on my front door. I view this favourably.

    • Trev

Thanks, agree about the tram, even tho’ as a Tuggers person won’t get any direct benefit – by the time the tram lines reach the hyperdome, I’ll be retired elsewhere!

With the expansion of candidates/electorates and dissatisfaction with major parties generally, could we see the first “state” govt formed by Greens/Indies..?

  26. The Essential Report
State voting intention July – September 2016

Also see Bernard’s paywalled article further up this page. Basically, pretty good news for Labor in most states (no Essential figures for Tassie, probably asked but sample would be small so they didn’t bother including it)

  27. Hi Angry Bee

Thanks. Can the Greens get a few MLAs elected? Maybe. Inner North (“Peoples’ Republic of Ainslie-Dickson-Turner- Downer”), most likely a good source of votes. Will there be a minority Government? I think so. Not too bad either – at least we might get a bit of accountability and transparency via the committee system. Independents? I don’t know. As always, some are genuine, and some appear to be tools of cashed-up interest groups. Not a fan of single issue politics.

I’m often surprised and alarmed by views here in Canberra. The current rates debate for example. Are they too high? Not necessarily in my view (although increases may hurt ome elderly people on fixed incomes living in high value suburbs and not eligible for Government benefits) . Then there are people who whinge about health and education. By comparison, we do do quite well, particularly with education. Some people here need to get out and about a bit more me thinks.

    • and some appear to be tools of cashed-up interest groups.

Some are just tools – period! (e.g. mark parton)

As a renter I can’t comment on rates, and I have no kids, nieces and nephs go to cattleticks/happy clapper schools (have to constantly bite my tongue at family functions!), so can’t comment on govt education system.

I’m a very light user of govt services – haven’t been near hospital as a patient since 1977! I drive on roads and pay my rego – thats about it.

That why I was wondering what other local pubsters had heard…

  28. Kampong Palmer Trev, AgreeBee – ACT Election

I also did a bit of electronic voting today and had the pleasure of numbering progressives.

Sad to know Simon Corbell isn’t standing. I’ve caught up with him at a couple of Beyond Zero/renewable energy meets. What that bloke has done for ACT is amazing. We have the cheapest power in the country by a long way as well as going 100% renewable by 2020 (almost there already)

With the reverse auctions that he deployed, the govt pockets the windfall when power prices go high (cf every other type of outsourcing esp by Libs, have the state pay when it’s low and when high, the company pockets the extra). I bang on about it because it’s so rare and already has made the ACT a bit of money.

But I share Abrybee’s worry that the libs will get it this time. I’m from “the south” (I’m really an ex-Sydney-sider so am amazed that there’s this thing between north and south). Many collegues down my way are upset they’re not getting a train and in big dummy spit don’t want anyone to have a decent public transport. I try to explain that it’s good – to use their terminology and appealing to sense of greed I say it get’s northerners off the road so we can drive more easily in city and then will be extended to us later.

That works a bit but there’s many more down here who I fear would stab themselves before allowing someone else to get a lolly.

The 5 members in 5 electorates that ALP/LNP stitched up tegether to to eliminate minor parties will, this time and for elections after this, bite ALP on the arse. If ALP does get a majority it will be slim, if a green does get in, they’ll almoster certainly have to partner with him (it’ll be a him, a Shane, if any). So 2 all in all seats, leaving 1 member in each seat unknown. The 2 southern seats will go Libs. I live in sookville, next to 2-bob capitaliston.

City was Green – who knows – if there is a green this will be the seat, else maybe Lib, spawls into “the foreshore”, trendy and yuppy and money.

2 north – 1 at least, Gininnderra, should be ALP. I work in Belco and too many people know the feds LNP tried hard to trash this joint, so much so, some of the restaurants and stores carry ALP placards and none show Libs. The other North, nappy valley, who knows.

So of the 2 unknowns, Barstards Inc. only need to get 1. ALP has to get both, or 1Alp/1Grn. 3 paths for LNP to win, only 1 for ALP. Now I need a drink(s) – Libs will stuff the joint up exactly like they did last time.

  29. A picture tells a thousand words. The US is certainly a special case. And the IPA and its Coalition servants what to push us in that same direction!
