Flowery Friday

For me, the past week has been one of overwhelming – and very mixed – emotions. Gough’s memorial service and those magnificent eulogies, the deaths of two beautiful horses on Cup Day, the (how surprising) “aggressive tax planning” on the part not just of multinationals but also of Australia’s own Future Fund, the manic malevolence of Minister Morrison.

And – the memorial service again. Not just the studied insult to FPMJG, trying to seat her next to Rudd. But the unstudied, gratuitous insult – the complete indifference – to all those ordinary members of the public who thought they had registered – who had been told they were registered – for places at the service.

Enough already.

I dedicate this evening’s post to smelling the roses . . .

And to a raffle, and drinks, and camaraderie . . .

Yes, I thought that would resonate with the denizens here at the pub. I especially enjoyed the comparison between the Rolling Stones and Justin B…….(ugh I just can’t bring myself to print certain names).

  2. And while I’m in grumpy old man mode, does anyone else think this craze of tattooing every bit of visible skin gone a bit too far???????

  3. Gigilene,

The piercing that really concerns me – and I was FURIOUS when DD had it done – is the tongue stud.

Fortunately, she no longer has it, and she did not suffer any ill-effects.

  4. CK,

Tongue piercings can be dangerous: they are particularly risky with bacterial infections, and can also damage the teeth.

  5. Tattoos – ugh. I see them as mutilation. On women, especially, they just look dirty.

My kids all have them – the boys just one each on the upper arm, hidden under even short sleeves. My daughter has a ‘tramp stamp’ (she hates me calling it that) on her lower back, done the day she was old enough to have a tattoo done. She also has a list of things she aspires to – ‘patience’, serenity’ etc – on one side, just under her armpit, done during the aftermath of a breakup with a long-term partner. She says no-one will ever see that. She can’t see it either, unless she finds a way to stick her head under her arm. I asked her why she didn’t spare the expense and the pain and just write it all on a post-it and stick it on her fridge, where at least she could read her list. You will all be familiar with the look I got in response.

At least she has not done what one of her friends did – had a rose tattooed just above one breast, which means she can never wear an elegant evening gown or low-cut top without the stupid thing being visible. One day she will, without a doubt, pay a fortune to have it lasered off.

  6. Gigilene,

I have occasionally wondered whether a male with a particular piercing and a woman using a certain contraceptive device could get tangled . . .

  7. If Robb says it you know it must be true.

The federal trade minister, Andrew Robb, has dismissed union fears that the job market would be flooded with cheap Chinese labour after the China free trade agreement (FTA) is concluded.

Robb would not be drawn on the detail of the deal, which is in the final stages of negotiation, telling reporters in Beijing that “Australian law would apply” to Chinese workers working on Chinese-backed infrastructure projects in Australia.

“[People on 457 visas] are getting Australian wages. We’ve had 14 years of the most significant private infrastructure development in our history. And we’ve been able to do it without cut-price labour,” Robb said.

  8. Some very old school Maori tattoos . Portraits by Charles Goldie painted at the start of last century.

    Trad male style

    Trad female style.

That was used in an old episode of Grey’s Anatomy. The doctors had to separate a couple who had become ‘joined’ in a way they did not intend.

  10. Robb is an idiot, a fool and a liar. We all know employers use 457 workers so they can avoid paying award rates.

The kitty, for sure, for sure.

Does the ‘brains trust’ employ a magical system for picking winners? If so, let’s run the kitty up to a squillion and run an anti-Abbott ad on all media outlets … or sumpin equally fantastical.

I mean, Sunday is for dreaming, right?

By the bye, Shortie was in full redeemable-pour-moi mode on Insiders this morning. And no, I don’t watch that execrable program unless informed that a quasi-luminary of note from our side is on.

Anyway, I’m now back on team-Shorten.

He’s persistent in pitching his message to that mythical “centre”. Maybe there’s some method in that madness.

  12. Did I catch a glimpse of the execrable Henderson on Insiders yet again?

I did but see him passing by
I wish he’d go away and die.

  13. Still ruminating over Gough’s life and the outrage which was his dismissal.

It goes without saying that most of us here don’t agree with the core philosophy of the Liberal Party. And it really does come down to core philosophy. Forget trickle-down economics and all similar frauds, because core belief is the one thing we can say for sure that does trickle down – to everything else.

To define this core belief of the Liberal Party as succinctly as I can is not difficult, though their are variants:

“For the individual, and let the rest fend for themselves.”

    Or: “Vested interests.”

Or: “My tribe and screw your tribe.”

Admittedly the Liberal Party is very good at disguising this core belief with layers of bullshit.

    Anyway, all that’s an aside.

What I really want to say is that the one thing, the one bloody thing above all, about the Liberal Party I cannot stomach, is that they will not accept the decision of the people. That is the cardinal sin in my book, for it is a repudiation of the whole idea of democracy.

Lose an election and their screams of illegitimacy are loud and immediate.

    “Bring on an election!”

    Fraser did it. Abbott.did it.

Gough did not. Shorten does not. Despite the most acute provocations.

Were, are, they fools? Perhaps, perhaps not. Whatever, it’s another reason I vote Labor.

Marr was ready to deck him over a comment from Gerard inferring Marr thought terrorism is a bit of a joke.

  15. This is a jade carving at one of the two art galleries at Quilpie. It cost a previous owner a fortune. He went broke trying to develop a huge art complex there and the current owner was fortunate enough to have it included when he bought the gallery.

It stands about a metre & a half tall and is magnificent. With the discussion of jade this afternoon I thought it might interest Pubsters to see it.

Wow. I’d be too scared to take on the job of shifting the beggar for fear of knocking off one of the bits.

  17. kaffeeklatscher,

Yeah, unfortunately the tip of one of the feathers broke off when it was moved to its current place in the specially made alcove.

Somebody did a marvelous job gluing it back on so that it is extremely difficult to tell which one it is.

    Many thanks, Lady Fiona.

My suggestion for Bronnie’s Question Time wear and Prissy and Abbott and Joe and Robb and Scrott and……

  19. Jeesus!..I got rotten and wild this morning when I tuned onto “Insiders” for just a moment to check the mood.. and there was Fran wetting herself over Mesma’s Harper’s Bazaar photo shoot…No bullshit!…I can’t believe the moxxy of that moll ; Bishop…she lost all female respect and legitimacy when she harloted herself to Credlin / Abbott / Pyne for them to attack Julia Gillard on the floor of the house..YOU SAW IT! We all saw it…: the catty swipes, the endless accusations…delivered second-hand from Credlin’s dirt-file, sheath by sheath of paper, delivered with that vague facial expression that showed she really didn’t have a clue where to go from there when proved out of her depth and knowledge.. An opportunist, she strumpeted herself and her womaness so that they couldn’t be attacked as misogynists, except “the idiot” couldn’t stand Bishop getting all the shots in and his sewer-mouth let him down..AGAIN!!..

That bitch with her “below -the-belt” attacks on the asbestos victims was a set-piece of vile formulae practice from the hell of Liberal / Textor tactics…she has used her privileged-class upbringing to brown-nose herself into positions of aggrandisement time and again…sure, SHE doesn’t suffer from the “glass ceiling syndrome” because she’s been groomed by the oligarchy and the patriarchy to harlot her gender to be waved as a “flag of legitimacy” of proof that the LNP. ” does understand the woman situation”…like f#ck they do!…like f#ck they care!…Abbott would sell the Virgin Mary into a forced marriage with Beelzebub if it convenienced him!

Mesma is alongside any of the front-bench as the lowest of the low schemers..and to treat her with any respect is to diminish the higher cause and honesty of Feminism, and all those who struggled so long and hard for decency and respect for their gender. That is why the conservatives have to tear down Julia Gillard…for she above all has been relentlessly attacked and attacked ..and attacked again and again and again…they must bring her down, they must!..for her to stand strong and proud AND be respected by the people. is to relegate her assassins to their residence in the pits of infamy…and believe me…their history has already been written and not any action by those MSM. thugs and spielers can alter the truth of it nor the wealthiest, most vile media mogul the world has ever known and regretted, erase one word of gross description of their insidious deeds……may they …indeed they will ..rot in their own particular hell !

  20. Back from reshaping a little part of Australia.
    Was fun but hard work.
If The idiot thinks his rhetoric from the past is still working out in the scrub he is sadly mistaken.
Universally thought of as a imbecile.

  21. They are definitely polishing Julie. Look at her beautiful photo … Well Fran said so. The Press and many Libs want Julie now. They’re fed up with Abbott.

I notice that Shorten mentioned Julia and Wayne with regards to Trade. Hopefully, he will mention her a bit more and give her credit where credit is due.

Became my fave after his excellent effort at doing the NZ regional accent of deep south NZ in “World’s Fastest Indian” . SFA would have noticed let alone cared what his accent was but he went to the trouble of learning how to speak that way. A+++ for diligence. The accent is kiwi with a wee dash of Scots.

  23. The RWNJs otherwise known as the Liberal/National Coalition. Offical Flower.

NOTES: The Triffids are man-made plants that were engineered as a source of oil. When Triffid oil is combined with petroleum the fuel is extended and becomes much cheaper. To make the Triffid oil more potent the stingers have to remain untouched. Oil manufactorers kept the Triffids in compounds where they couldn’t hurt anyone (except the occasional worker) but when mysterious lights blind 99% of humanity the Triffids escape and kill the easy prey, blind humanity.
