  2. All this crap about “union” corruption….the behaviour of ALL the players in mega construction or ANY big business in a capital-based society is the same…it’s all “insider trading” “sweetheart deakls” ..”And Per Mei” conversations.
Everybody from the smallest tradie to the biggest corp’ does deals with it’s workforce, it’s suppliers, it’s customers..it’s waht makes the capitalist world go ’round…GMH. will go the country that gives it the “best deal” on low-wages….Mining will go to the most suitable nation that can allow it a good “tax deal” AND cheap labour….the wealthy will send their money to a “tax haven”…
There is nothing “going on” that hasn’t been “going on” since Caesar gave Cicero permission to set up a banking societas in Bythnia to facillitate trade with promissory notes in lieu of cash!

  3. Good morning everyone.
Well said Jaycee. The coalition are simply anti-union; so much so that I, for one, believe it must be the fact that the unions protect the rights of workers that stick in the craw of the rich capitalists and their political party mates.

  4. Just saw HoJo in anti-media mode refusing to give them the time of day. Amazing isn’t it that before the election he (and the rest of the rabble) clamoured to get before the cameras to flap their mouths off telling the latest coalition lies.

  5. Sorry about the links to the Daily Telegraph here, you don’t have to use them.

Murdoch’s intention to get rid of/take over the ABC and get his claws on the Australia Network are now very blatant. Today’s online Smelly leaps in with its two top stories both about Abbott and the ABC. I suppose the interate papers are much the same.
First this “Tony Abott: You can spell treachery A-B-C”
This features the comments of a ‘former ABC chairman”, none other than Maurice Newman, backing Abbott’s ‘blistering attack’ on the ABC.
    http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw/prime-minister-brands-the-abc-unaustralian-in-the-wake-of-the-navyasylum-seeker-torture-story/story-fni0cx12-1226813436670

Right underneath is “Anti-Aussie ABC service faces axe”, a load of made-up bulldust about cabinet having discussed ending the AbC’s contract to provide thje Australia Network. Not exactly axing it though, We all know where that contract will be going should cabinet decide to take it away from the ABC. The Smelly tactfully forgets to mention that.
    http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/national/abc-asian-broadcasting-service-may-be-axed/story-fni0xqrc-1226813526885

And now for the really important bit – the way the ABC has tarnished the reputation of Our Navy. Before going into all that let’s just have a reminder of the gleeful way the Murdoch press has covered navy scandals in the past – like this
    http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/national/sailors-allegedly-sexually-assaulted-on-their-birthday-with-objects-like-carrots/story-fni0xqrb-1226755245458

Now that Murdoch has decided to use the RAN in his campaign to get hold of taxpayer funded services the tune has changed. The Smelly ran a story on Monday about ‘Navy’s hands tied as broadcaster tarnishes its reputation’.
    http://www.pressdisplay.com/pressdisplay/viewer.aspx
It was followed up with “Why does the ABC hate our navy?” yesterday morning.
    http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/opinion/why-does-the-abc-hate-our-navy/story-fni0cwl5-1226812397051

Both pieces set up Abbott’s 2GB interview yesterday in the most blatant way. Get the papers out into Boganland and then have Hadley go over the same ground with The Idiot as part of the ‘get rid of the ABC’ theme of his rant.
I see a carefully orchestrated campaign here, with the PM and the RAN the star players. If anyone ever doubted Murdoch’s intentions or his power over the PM the events of the last few days should end that doubt. What a novel use for our navy. What next? Murdoch using the army to take over the government?

  6. I wonder if Malcolm will now cancel his fitting at the tailor for his black shirt…and Lucy will cancel her appointment at the hairdresser for the latest Liberal Ladies hairstyle..: “Eva Braun Bouffant” ?

  7. Re. Murdoch’s attack on the ABC: it’s just another bootstrap.

It’s another “Peoples Revolt” type Murdoch campaign.

Old Hands at Murdoch-watching have seen it many times.

First you seed the news with some comments from a “prominent” personage, like a business leader, or (in this case) the PM, then take it up the next day as if you’d only just discovered there was an issue behind the statements.

It used to be “The Tax Revolt”. Every year or so The Australian would find some head of an industry group to waffle something about how taxes were too high. They’d report it, then next day get one of their op ed writers to comment, then throw it around the newsroom with other writers chiming in, maybe arrange to have some questions asked in parliament, throw it to the ABC and other news organizations, until in the end the mild concern had turned into (alleged) angry mobs marching down George St. with torches and pitchforks demanding an instant end to income tax, or a flat rate or whatever the latest brain fart would be.

In other words, a complete bootstrap, dreamed-up between a few senior Murdoch hacks, sharing an office in Sydney, with the help of some tame politicians and a news-starved non-Murdoch media looking for controversy.

All you had to do to debunk “The Tax Revolt” splash was walk over to the window and open it to see that the supposed seething crowds, sick of ruinous taxes were totally imaginary.

Ironically, this time, the object of the exercise IS the ABC so they can be guaranteed to take up the story, even if in their own defence, so the bootstrap has a ready-made means of spreading.

I mildly pity the ABC. They thought they could suck up to the Coalition during Labor’s time in office, not realizing that in certain circles of the conservative world, NOTHING the ABC does is ever any good, or ever will be. Gillard provided herself as a willing punching bag for the likes of Leigh Sales and Tony Jones. She was too scared of the tidal wave of mockery if she dared to complain about their slanted, rather vicious questioning of anything and everything she did, said or might have done or said. Maybe she wasn’t scared, maybe she was just resigned to it and couldn’t be bothered to whinge.

On the bright side, boofheads like Ray Hadley, 2GB in general and Tony Abbott are not well-liked by the public. Anything they promote will be received with skepticism by the general public. The Daily Telegraph is the least-trusted newspaper in the nation, so there’s hope that this will all blow over, as just another Murdoch piss-and-wind effort.

And the charges are a bit jump-the-shark too. The ABC is supposed to be “unpatriotic”? The last time this was levelled at the ABC was by Alston, in 2003 when we were actually engaged in a war (however obliquely – I think it boiled down to one or two platoons of the SAS, for a few days doing armed checkpoint duty). This time it’s Morrison’s phoney bullshit war, Operation Sovereign Borders, complete with “our noble RAN” doing their bit to protect Australia’s frontiers. Apparently, despite lliterally thousands of documented incidents of abuse, sexual molestation, barstardization, humiliation and outright thuggery,, it is to be assumed that – in a war situation – our nautical noddies can do no wrong.

Hey, the Navy wanted “in” on OpSov, they thought it’d be the Battle Of The Sunda Strait all over again, glory and celebration as they turned back the hordes of swarthy invaders… well, they can take the rough with the smooth as far as I’m concerned.

In a perverse way I hope Abbott DOES rip the ABC’s funding to pieces. He can’t kill it off, but he can get it angry and narky, which Julia Gillard found out can be a tad embarrassing at times.

Who’s up for a brand new comedy series of At Home With Tony?

3D. Viewed through the lens of an anal speculum!

  11. [” Who’s up for a brand new comedy series of At Home With Tony?”]
I wonder these days if there IS a home.

  12. Memo to the ABC, Greens & anybody else who thinks they can arrive at an accommodation with Abbott/Murdoch.
You can’t. They want the fucking lot. That’s it.

  13. David Donovan ‏@davrosz 8m
Been told senior ABC staff were told to “go easy” on the Coalition to curry favour as they were expected to win. How’s that working out?

Such a shame they didn’t decide to be unapologetic lefties after that. At least that way when they would be eventually thrown out they’d be still liked by at least one side of politics. Now they’ll just be disliked by both sides, seen as lefty traitors by the right and cowardly sellouts by the left.

  14. Yes, if Tony believes the ABC should that him fairly, he should be asking for that skit. Trouble is, it might be difficult finding him at home. Finding Maggie might be harder. They might even find out where he lays his weary head,

Yes Tony I do agree with you, the ABC and all other MSM should give you the same treatment as they did Julia.

Now another pressing concern oI have, is why Tony believes millions should be spent on inquiry into the harm he obviously believe wind-farms causes to ones health. There have been over twenty in depth inquiries over the last few years. All found in the negative to this question. They cause no harm.

  15. Fed up
The studies, I believe, have shown a positive correlatio to whether or not the residents are receiving money for the presence of turbines on their property or not.
    Strange, that!

  16. Cliff, I notice the same with that poll. Went very quickly to supporting what Tony said. I suspect there is not that many that care. For that to be true, Tony would need to be popular with the community. Every poll, even before the election show that the public thinks he is on the nose.

All polls are going south for the man. At quite a rapid rate.

  17. The real issue today – what will happen to SPC Ardmona.

This one is paywalled, but I nicked a summary from Facebook.
Joe Hockey strongly hints that food processor SPC Ardmona will be unsuccessful in its bid for emergency assistance, Tony Abbott refuses to meet own expert advisors over whether or not to provide emergency funding to save the food processor from collapse, Abbott denies pre-cabinet briefing from advisors including Telstra chairwoman Catherine Livingstone, former Manufacturing Australia chief and Reserve Bank board member Dick Warburton, 3000 jobs likely to be lost in the Goulburn Valley
    http://www.afr.com/p/national/pm_refuses_expert_help_on_spc_ardmona_Yzr5YNJ7UnVjVMC4i291MN

This one is also paywalled but than won’t stop you finding it.
The true stupidity pf the Abbott government – spending a billion on up-grading water infrastructure and then deciding to kill the industry that uses the water.
Irrigators in the Goulburn Valley slam the Abbott Government over the apparent contradictions in its position on SPC Ardmona, irrigators point out that the Abbott Government has agreed to spend $1 billion on upgrading water infrastructure in the area as an alternative to water buybacks, irrigators say “it makes no sense to us. What you could end up with is a state-of-the-art delivery system with no customers…You’re talking about blowing money into the sky – it’s crazy”

  18. Did anyone notice the US minimum wage increase that Obama announced from $7.25 to $10.10 per hour ( for adults)? Australia’s minimum wage rate is $16.37. That’s what unions have done for us – and what the Liberals and Business are about when they attack unions.

  19. BK

From the abstract of a Dutch study

. The study further demonstrates that people who benefit economically from wind turbines have a significantly decreased risk of annoyance, despite exposure to similar sound levels.

Green eyed monster syndrome enhanced when the landowner with unsuitable land looks out the window at their neigbours place.

High turbine visibility enhances negative response, and having wind turbines visible from the dwelling significantly increased the risk of annoyance.

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19640029

  20. Tony senses business confidence is growing. If one follows the polls, he is the only one that is in step, in this regard. Yes, the usual homily before the first cabinet meeting. Was the figure he gave of Labor’s debt true, or did he include Hpckey’ds post election effort.

Yes, he is doing it all for us, not philosophy. No mention of ideology, though. His body language does not, I say again, does not ooze confidence.

Now just heard representative talking about inudsry standing on their own feet. He said that is OK when the playing files is lawful, he playing field is not,.

The Tanya, the Deputy Labor leader is out, defending free speech. Yes, backing the ABC for their stand.

Wonder what has happened to the notion of free speech from this government.

  21. I wonder how World Heritage is going to deal, with or think of Mr. Abbott’s applications to take so much out of their register. Yes, a government asking for the right to put at risk, why many are proud to see on that list.

Once these sites are destroyed, they are gone forever. What happens if World Heritage refuses?

  22. Yes Mr. Abbott, you are once again correct, under your watch, Australia is indeed open for plundering. Could Mr. Abbott is the greatest blunder down under?

  23. Latika’s been faithfully tweeting Abbott quotes from the Coalition cabinet meeting. All platitudes as far as I can see. This one is my favourite:

    Latika Bourke ‏@latikambourke 32m

PM Abbott tells Cabinets he’s cutting spending to get taxes down which will see wages grow higher. @abcnews

Basically meaningless, that one. A bit like when he used to say getting rid of the Carbon Tax would lead to greater productivity. “We’ll do this and then that will happen…. somehow.”

  24. Or this one:

    Latika Bourke ‏@latikambourke 38m

PM Abbott tells his Cabinet colleagues ‘we as a Government know what we’re doing and we’re going to get it done.’ @abcnews

It’s a comfort to know he has to tell his cabinet that. They mightn’t have known otherwise.

  25. Murray MP Sharman Stone warns of ‘diabolical’ result without help for SPC Ardmona
    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-01-30/spc-update/5226956?section=business

The ABC forgot one little thing. During the election campaign Abbott gave $16 million to Cadbury to finance extensons to the plant. Cadbury is owned by multi-national company Mondelez International, formerly known as Kraft. Foods Inc. Mondelez reported an overall 3rd quarter profit of $1.02 billion last November. They did not need financial help from Australian tax payers.
    http://www.4-traders.com/MONDELEZ-INTERNATIONAL-IN-11499018/news/Mondelez-International-Inc–Mondelez-3rd-Quarter-Profit-Up-57-on-Higher-Sales-Tax-Gain-17437187/

But that was then, this is now. Back then Abbott had an election to win and Tasmanian voters to bribe. This is now, he won, why should he care about jobs, farmers and the welfare of regional Australia.

  26. Whatever decision Cabinet makes on SPC will be the right decision. We’ll learn this from News ltd.

  27. I suspect there is now a battle royal occurring between Bernadi’s and Turnbull’s mobs. Yes, another on industry assistance,

    That is just for starters.

  28. “Aguirre’, yes, I he4ard him say he knows what he is doing, and is doing it.

The thought entered my mind, is Abbott trying to convince us, or himself. Funny statements for a leader to make.

  29. The only way SPC will get assistance, is if they promise to take on the unions.

By the way the unions in this case have proposed a twelve month wage freeze. Yes, this is what the union offered.

Will not please this government, though, I bet. They want their full pound of flesh, nothing less..

  30. This is an article that Abbott wrote in 1987 for the Bulletin on why he abandoned his goal of becoming a priest. In his own words he shows his lack of empathy for his fellow priests and his brown nosing of the staff.

” A little earlier, I had been appointed college infirmarian. This post was a legacy from quasi-monastic days and involved supervising the medicine cabinet and ensuring that the ill were not forgotten in their rooms.

But during winter, when up to 30 percent of the college would be down with “flu” at any one time, the infirmarian spent much of his day ferrying food and aspirin to the rooms of the sick. My view was that I knew nothing about medicine and that those too sick to eat in the dining room ought to be in hospital.

Anyway, I thought, most were malingering. So I encouraged “self-service” of medicines and suggested that meals would be better fetched by the friends of the sick. Many deeply resented this disdain for college’s caring and communitarian ethos. And, I confess, I did not have the courage to refuse room service to members of the seminary staff”

Another trainee rebuts Abbott in a following article.

    Click to access Bulletin2.pdf

In his article he quotes ” “Myers Briggs personality indicator” that was used to check priests and then I remembered that QLD LNP put all its candidates in last QLD election through this test and how well did that turn out.

  31. What sorts of unions do we have here? They seem to constantly accept wage freeze or cuts or some other working arrangements. Shouldn’t they be fighting to preserve the workers’ rights and to improve their conditions?

  32. Interesting re Route 66. I actually watched a bit of an episode yesterday, for the first time ever. Also intersting watching that well known Billy Boy, George Maharis, try to ogle off the chicks in that clip. What a great actor!
Didn’t Nelson Riddle write the Batman theme?

  33. Rumours of a ’round-up’ of refugees currently living in the community while their appeals go through the courts have been flying around for a couple of days. Some suggested that all asylum seekers who arrived by boat and were living on the mainland would be deported or sent to Nauru or Manus Island.

Now Morrison has confirmed what will happen.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has confirmed rumours of a ‘‘roundup’’ of asylum seekers who are in the community after unsuccessful appeals against adverse decisions on their refugee status.

Meanwhile, tender documents reveal the government will also spend $6 million in the next six months returing failed asylum seekers under a ‘‘voluntary’’ scheme.

    ‘Voluntary’ deportation. That’s new.

  34. “‘Voluntary’ deportation. That’s new.”

Not now I suspect. Borrowed from the days of Howard. I was under the impression that refugee from the mainland have been transported overseas for a time now.

  35. BK, yes it is beyond comprehension. Setting up this RC is the best thing Julia did. I hope it eventually leads to prosecutions.
