  1. kambah mick, yes back in the days of that inquiry, it was indeed delivered what was not expected. So anything about Bottom of Harbour Schemes. The same will occur this time Unions cannot be guilty of corruption without bosses being involved.

Does Abbott and Abetz believe the union, and yes, many bosses are going to sit quietly while he crucifies them.

  2. I have to admit that I’m starting to get worried about this 2nd extended heatwave. While it doesn’t look as intense as the last one, it looks like it’s going to be a few days longer. Especially inland, where a lot of areas are looking like they’ll get 7+ days above 40.

Oh well, a couple more years like this and let’s see if those farmers will still be proud of who they voted for (most of them anyway).

  3. Fed Up

So anything about Bottom of Harbour Schemes.

A real problem was that the C’wlth was not ‘tooled’ up to strike at the time. It took about 4 years to do anything about it.

Any Abbott RC will produce the same – lots of innuendo and bugger all action.

  4. Kirsdarke

I have to admit that I’m starting to get worried

Oppressive is about the term for it.

  5. Kambah Mick

You don’t report in often, but when you do you always make sense, and give a bit of a history lesson to me. I’ve only been following politics since 2006 and have huge gaps in my knowledge. Thanks for that info on past RC’s.

  6. Fed Up

but does not the Nauruan court system end up in our high courts.

    The Appeals bit does.

  7. I hope we get a royal commission into the transport industry here.
That’ll show the lazy drugged up cowboys who is in charge now.

  8. The Nauruan court system allows appeals to our High Court, but this doesn’t happen very often. The Nauruan courts decide all constitutional issues.

The Supreme Court of Nauru is the highest court when addressing constitutional issues; it is presided over by a judge who is also the Chief Justice of Nauru. Appeals against decisions of the Supreme Court on miscellaneous matters go to the Appellate Court of Nauru, which is comprised of two judges. Parliament cannot overturn court decisions. Cases may be brought before the High Court of Australia on Criminal and Civil Actions by virtue of the Appeals Act; however, legal decisions rarely are so reviewed. The District Court is presided over by a Resident Magistrate, who is also the Registrar of the Supreme Court. The Family Court is also presided by the Resident Magistrate as Chairman of a three- member panel. There are two other quasi-courts established under the Constitution: The Public Service Appeal Board and the Police Appeal Board. Both are presided over by the Chief Justice of Nauru as the chairman of the panel with two members for each board.,/blockquote>

  9. Tony Abbott, 24 July 2013, joint doorstop interview at Runaway Bay, Queensland.
    QUESTION:
Mr Abbott, your Chief of Staff pleaded guilty this morning to a drink drive charge. How do you feel about that?

    TONY ABBOTT:
Look, we’ve got to allow the media to do their job,……………………………………….
    http://pandora.nla.gov.au/pan/22487/20130903-0148/www.tonyabbott.com.au/LatestNews/InterviewTranscripts/tabid/85/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/9308/Joint-Doorstop-Interview-Runaway-Bay-Queensland.html

This is how Abbott allows the media to do their job.
    Tony Abbott, earlier today –
Accused the ABC of of being unpatriotic in its coverage of the Edward Snowden leaks and asylum seeker abuse claims.
Said ‘A lot of people feel at the moment that the ABC instinctively takes everyone’s side but Australia’s,”
Raised questions about the cost and necessity of the ABC’s new Fact Check unit, saying “surely that should come naturally to any media organisation?”.
Had the Good, Loyal Girl go into bat for him by demanding the ABC apologise for casting doubt on the reputation of Royal Australian Navy sailors.
And did it all on 2GB as he lacked the intestinal fortitude to say these things at a presser in front of ABC journalists.

  10. Meh. They’re just doing the rounds again. ABC-Bashing is in the mix with all the other bashing they do – Unions, Unemployed, Asylum Seekers, etc etc. I get the feeling there’s not a lot of system in it. They just attack all their favourite scapegoats on rotation until they notice one of their attacks getting a bit of support, then they move in for the kill. It also keeps the news cycle ticking over so that nobody in the media gets too curious about whether the Coalition are actually doing anything useful. Largely complaint media takes care of the rest.

It’s easy to forget that they’re just PR creatures in the Liberal Party. They’re not equipped to oversee policy implementation, either good or evil. They can wreck, they can bend over to business, they can run a negative campaign, and they can mouth slogans. Anything more sophisticated than that is beyond them. But they are pretty good at the PR side of things. They bash asylum seekers because they believe it’s what their base wants them to do. But what they’re mostly doing is trying to sell success in border protection, whether they’re succeeding or not.

  11. I do find it somewhat curious that the major source of Abbott’s comments denigrating the ABC is the ABC. Doesn’t seem logical on the face of it. But then I believe some within the hierarchy of the organisation are complicit in its destruction.

  12. This should be interesting:
    http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/law-order/doubt-over-craig-thomson-charges/story-fni0fee2-1226813236519

POLICE may have bungled the fraud case against Craig Thomson by charging him with the wrong offences, a court has heard.

Mr Rozencwajg said instead of alleging a deception of the Health Services Union, the charges alleged a deception of the Commonwealth Bank and Diners Club, the lending institutions that issued the cards at the centre of the alleged offending.

But he said he couldn’t see how either institution had been defrauded.

He said the cards were issued to Mr Thomson, were valid cards, bore his name and could be used to purchase goods and services.

The comments echoed arguments put forward by Mr Thomson’s defence barrister, Greg James QC, who picked apart the prosecutions case during his closing submissions…

  13. Very late to this but here they are anyway…

  15. Forever Janice,
re Nauru pie. I think the recipe is a layer of seabed minerals, a filling of Big Dirt and a crust of well rolled oily Fib.

  16. TL

    Fiona

Professor Ross Fitzgerald penned a piece last weekend for The Australian headed:

Nation better off under an economically astute Abbott’.

The professor is damn right. We would be IF he was “economically astute” .

  17. I hope that’s true. Ken Smith has been a disgrace of a speaker.

Mind you, him staying on would help in suffocating the Coalition’s message until the election. They only seem to be interested in Shaw’s stunts, one of which is firing potshots at Smith as well as steering the whole L/NP toward his own bizarre agenda.

  18. Just been listening to 2GB in the car.

Bolt is on and says that he admits now he doubted Abbott’s resolve, but says he’s got his mojo back by bashing the ABC.

Calling for a sell-off of all ABC functions, stacking of the Board to make sure the agenda is carried through (as, he now admits, Howard attempted), changes to charter legislation etc.

Says if all the conservatives pull together “against the common enemy” (i.e. the ABC) the ABC will be history by the time of the next election. A distant memory. Gone, privatized, dead, buried and cremated.

Who wants to listen to the Millet Futures news on Countrywide anyway, when there’s Ray Hadley to inspire them?

So much for all that kow-towing. It got the ABC absolutely effing nowhere.

  19. Would Abbott sell the ABC? Was it Andrew Elder who suggested the Nats couldn’t countenance the privatisation of the ABC because rural folk depend on the ABC?

  20. AJ,
The Nats’ attachment to the ABC has been known for a long time. Their attachment to Telstra, similarly.

That didn’t stop Howard completing Telstra’s privatisation. It probably won’t stop PMBO’s flogging off the ABC.

I’ll be only too happy to be proved wrong.

  21. Tsk, wrist slap.

Privatising Telstra took place entirely under Honest John’s “watch”. Fact check, Fiona, even if your OH is an ex PMG/Telecom/Telstra engineer AND holds shares …

  22. Leftrightout

*ahem – about to display total ignorance*

Who or what is Joe Root? And why is 66 important?

  23. Route 66, dear….

One of the absolute coolest TV series themes ever written. By Nelson Riddle, of course.

  24. BB,
That was delightful, and completely new to me – thank you! Geez, Nelson Riddle was a great composer and musician.

  25. The Lib trolls have been busy little beavers today. They must have been given a heads up on Abbott’s sob story on the manly shoulder of Hadley about the ABC. The blogs have alive comment from his cheer squad. I read one SMS article earlier and it had a poll up to that time of 6500 votes 80% against Abbott. I have just reread it and 62366 people have voted and it has 62% for him. A bit of a skew seeing on reading the comments they were going ten to one against him.

  26. Further to what I said last night I found this comment on the Guardian

In an absolutely sterling effort of poll rigging, the Sydney Morning Herald poll on the question “Do you agree with the Prime Minister’s comments about the ABC?” has received 19,906 votes in the space of 80 minutes. This has meant that the poll has gone from 50% Yes 50% No with 42,000 votes to 62% Yes 38% No with 61,906 votes. The average rate of voting has been 248.8 votes cast per minute, or 4 per second
A couple of hours before I started seriously monitoring the poll rigging the voting had been 30% Yes to 70% No with approximately 25,000 votes
I don’t even have a feeling that there has been a concerted effort by a group to bias this poll in favour of the Government, I would have to say that it is both blindingly obvious and executed in a very amateur manner.
I ask you, 4 concerned voters voting every second in favour of the Government over a period of 80 minutes!
There is a very Machiavellian line about the ends justifying the means, so if it means that Abbott can now say that many people agree with him about the ABC then the method is justified in the minds of some of his supporters
    Michael
