Australian troops going to the Middle East after March this year will be up to $19,000 worse off

MOST Australian troops serving a six-month tour of duty in the Middle East will be up to $19,000 worse off under a pay cut to be announced today.

The Abbott Government will save millions of dollars by dividing Operation Slipper into three separate missions covering Afghanistan (Slipper), maritime operations in the Arabian Gulf (Operation Manitou) and support operations in the Gulf States (Operation Accordion).

Only the Operation Slipper part will be designated “warlike” and troops serving in Afghanistan will keep their campaign allowance of $200-a-day tax free.

West Australians could find out as early as tomorrow night if they will be ordered back to the polls for a fresh Senate election.

A two-day hearing over the bungled election begins in Melbourne today before High Court Justice Kenneth Hayne. The court will sit as the Court of Disputed Returns.

  2. About the pay cut for defence personnel – there’s a lot of spin from defence to try to justify this decision. Even troops involved in Operation Slipper in Afghanistan won’t be immune.

Defence chiefs have approved the cuts. They have looked at the conditions personnel now work in and have decided that air-conditioned accommodation, hot showers and edible meals meaqn you are not living in ‘war-like’ conditions and so don’t need that extra money. Not even if you are in Afghanistan.
The spokesman said a review of living and working conditions in the Middle East had identified that very few ADF members were currently serving in conditions that met requirements for the payment of the field allowance.

“This has been brought about by the substantial investment in facilities, amenities and support services,” the spokesman said.

From March 1, personnel who were required to live and work in “field conditions” in the Middle East would still be eligible for the “field allowance” which varies from $33.08 to $56.36 per day but that have to be would be approved on a case-by-case basis.

Those in Afghanistan living in safe circumstances in airconditioned accommodation, with hot showers and hot meals, would no longer be eligible.

Most of those deployed will no longer be eligible for the extra 10 days leave they can now be given for service in the Middle East.

    And –

A Defence spokesman said better amenities, support services and facilities had improved conditions for many members abroad, particularly those in Gulf states. Even those still in Afghanistan after Australia’s drawdown of most troops will no longer get the allowance if deemed to be ”living in air-con accommodation and get hot showers, and hot meals etc”, the spokesman said.

We are going to be even more short of soldiers now. And sailors. Abbott insults navy personnel by saying they are so easily distracted from their work that they don’t know where they are, the Defence chiefs think putting your life in danger by being in Afghanistan is OK as long as you are living in air-conditioned comfort. Who would want the job?

Did you notice the grocer was juggling some fruit while doing the split thing?

    Cracked me up!

  5. If you are like me you never watch 7.30, there seems little point sitting through half an hour of snark, bullshit and Tory propaganda. I rely on the interwebs to let me know if something important or interesting happened so I can catch up.

Last night that ‘something interesting’ did happen, but not on the show. The main event was the Twitter exchange between Madame Snark and Mr Noonan afterwards.

  6. You’d never think she’s the same person:

Many years ago, when Sales was NSW Pol. reporter, she was quite competent and likeable. Those days are gone.

  7. gigi

    Juggling beyond me.

I could chuck a well rated ‘spin’ ball playing Crickett … but useless at fielding or bating.

Maybe I was the very local version of Phil Tuffnell.

  8. gigi

When you said P Tuffnel you didn’t mean Howard by any chance …

Phil was better than that! I can remember him scoring 7 once.

  9. Erica is asking for a stronger ‘response’ to Union corruption. I wonder who was paying the money …

What Eric Abetz wants is not very much important to me.

  10. From a comment on Leone’s link:

Prognostication: She’ll stand for the Liarbrils after the baby…..

Well, she is blonde, after all …

  11. Abbott chose Ray Hadley’s show to make that criticism of the ABC. Abbott refuses to appear on any ABC show at all. He prefers love-ins with Alan Jones and Ray Hadley to what passes for serious interviews on the ABC. How many days is it now since he last did a Q&A?

If Abbott only wants to talk to Radio Bogan these days then that’s fine. The less I see of him the better. But does he understand audience numbers for these shows are falling as listeners turn off or die of old age? Doesn’t he realise he’s just preaching to what’s left of the choir? You’d think with his polling heading south at warp speed he’d be trying to win over a few voters by chasing a bigger and younger audience.

  12. Leone,
Abbott is as cunning as a lavatory rat and he only talks to rats of his kind. He is arrogant enough and stupid enough to think the wider electorate either don’t matter or are already wired to the likes of his rattus mates like Hadley and Jones.

Meanwhile, the incompetent bishop is up in Q’ld displaying her obnoxious, nasty side as she supports the like-minded Glasson – and boy, he is a typical, arrogant prick that inhabits the coalition. Really, Terri Butler needs only to prod and poke his ego and then stand back and watch the explosions of fireworks – he’s a man with a short fuse so it wouldn’t take long before he disgraced himself and lost his temper.

  13. An observation:
Has anyone noticed that many of the photos of Mr Abbott (in particular), even in articles that are supposedly positive towards him, are less than flattering? In the last two or three weeks it suddenly dawned on me that I had rarely seen an image of ‘our dear leader’ that did not have him with his mouth open gormlessly, or looking like he had just been told something and was trying to chew his way to understanding?

In fact, I cannot recall seeing images of previous incumbents of his position looking quite so … lacking in dignity (or quite so ‘without it’).

  14. Another one from Liars Incorporated:

The Federal Government’s candidate in Kevin Rudd’s old seat of Griffith has refused to restate his support for a GP co-payment, in a clear sign the proposal is hurting the Coalition’s chances in the upcoming by-election.

Bill Glasson had previously told the ABC he supported making patients pay a $6 fee to help send a price signal that medical care does not come for free.

    Offshore arrivals

Nora Farren, director of research at Colliers, said offshore retailers were attracted to the Australian retail sector because the local economy was strong relative to many other countries around the world.

Australians were still showing a propensity to spend in the retail sector and consumers were generally enthusiastic about new offerings.

  16. The abbott is nought but a disgusting little treasonous bigot. It is way beyond time when the journalists in this country quit propping him up and began a concerted compaign to shine the light on the rotten character he is……The ABC lot are getting heaps of thanks for all they did for him over the past years aren’t they? Are they going to continue to lick his bum and get kicked in the teeth, or show a bit of pride and give him what he deserves?

  17. It explains perhaps why Julia Gillard chose not to ring the President of Nauru for so long. The Nauruan govt appears to be quite unstable.

  18. Has The Idiot, keen to impress listeners to Radio Bogan, gone off on another frolic of his own with his attack on the ABC?

After Mr Abbott’s criticism of the ABC, Employment Minister Eric Abetz drew on the national broadcaster’s reporting this week – in conjunction with Fairfax Media – on the building industry to back up his call for the re-establishment of the Coalition’s construction watchdog.

”Given the revelations from the ABC and Fairfax Media, it is quite clear we need to re-institute the Australian Building and Construction Commission,” he said.

When asked if the ABC gave taxpayers good value for money, Senator Abetz deferred to Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull, but added that the ABC and Fairfax had done a “great public service” in their reports of union and construction industry corruption.

If a Labor minister and his PM had said such wildly different things within such a short time the media would have been screaming about ‘leadership tensions’.

  19. gigilene

Considering the influence Australia has perhaps the recent incidents are about carrying out our wishes ? For instance the sacked magistrate wanted to hold open court hearings in the AS camp. Very convenient for a government wanting to keep everyone out.

  20. Poor little Latika is having a hard time of it on Twitter. Those on the right seem to have forgotten her ongoing contributions while doing the spambot thing for their Fuhrer. Those opposite are doing what they’ve always done; ie slag her off for being the LNP office girl.

  21. Janice,
