And Remember

Shorten is dealing with Cassidy quite easily.
Would the great God of irony ensure that Michael Smith is the one to bring down Joyce and Brandis. and severely weaken abbott.
I think Shorten is too polite about this government’s actions. I prefer Albo’s steel-capped boot approach.
It would be such karma, Ian.
Knowing our MSM, however, they’ll beat the issue up for a couple of days for the red faces (assuming Joyce and Brandis are capable of shame or embarrassment) before moving on.
Ian,
I promise a sacrifice of a stuffed toy goat to the God of Irony if it be so.
That bloody Brandis exhibits all the distastful recorded irritations of an adult Logger-crab.
B Shorten is not showing his true nature yet. He only appears polite, imo, but in reality he might not be.
*furiously wikis Logger-crabs*
Oh ‘ello…we’ve got the “Virgin Tingle” too!
The attourney general is a crook!!??
According to Insiders, the first cause that bought Abbott into the spotlight, was his fight against the university union compulsory fees. One needs to remember, that what exist now, is not the same, as in the past.
Talk about personal vendettas, which seem to drive this government.
Education is seen as a bigger mess than migration. Could not agree more.
is it just me but I am wondering where is SHY with her tears for asylum seekers and where are the refugee advocates, or now the LIbs are in power have they stopped?
They could still be making statements but the media now regards refugee advocate complaints as old bread.
50m off Indonesia, but calling Australia for help? S&R will do their best, but I don’t see this one as being “our” fault:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-09-29/asylum-seeker-boat-sank-50-metres-off-indonesian-shore/4987412
TA wants us to focus on sport while the ‘grown-ups’ get on with governing. Well he’d better have a stern talk to this lot then…
If I remember correctly the Howard Govt warned charities and NGO’s that speaking out would cost them funding , maybe another back to the past policy- but not yet announced.
The fireman rescuing the kitten was a positive in a sea of doom and negativity- as someone said good people do exist and 3,700,000 voted Labor! All those minor parties were to sop up the vote as Abbott knew he was unpopular- but he persuaded people to vote against Labor and that’s all it took.
From Cheech & Chong..’Buster the logger-crab”…Canadian slang.
it might have gone down close to Indo shores (washed towards land maybe?) but if the call went out on Thursday (and who in the right mind would believe Morriscum?) with GPS co-ordinates, what happened in the missing 24 hours? What orders were issued and who issued them?
Catalyst – It occurred to me a couple a days ago that, if SH-Y is true to the kinds of things she was saying in Parliament last year, she’d be totally fine with what’s happening now. She shed tears over asylum seekers in detention, but when questioned about deaths at sea her opinion was that it’s inevitable, and the fight to get to Australia on boats is romantic. I’ve been furious with her for finding drownings preferable to detention.
Interesting watching them chat about the Greens on Insiders. They’re right about the effect of Bob Brown leaving having an effect on their support, and Marr is sort-of right also about the opposition to ETS damaging their standing in the community. But those are both subsidiary factors. The real issue with them is that they’ve allowed their message to be muddied, because they’ve been focussing on attacking the ALP. That damaged both parties.
What needs to be kept in mind is not their share of the vote at the 2010 election, but that it actually peaked somewhere around 14%. The reason it did was because there was a strong focus on climate change in the early days of the Rudd government, and back then the Greens were more or less aligning themselves with the ALP on the issue. The general feeling out in the electorate is that if the ALP are ‘good’ the Greens may well be even ‘better’ on the environment. But that if the ALP are ‘bad’, the Greens are just marginal players. Therefore, a strong Greens vote relies on a strong ALP vote.
They haven’t figured that out yet. They’re so gung-ho on product differentiation that they don’t even know who their allies are. And Australians don’t want socialists masquerading as greens, they want greens. So they’re not going to be winning that vote-share back any time soon.
The Greens used to be the ‘safe’ vote for Labor voters who were angry with Labor for some reason. If Labor was in the bad books for whatever reason the Greens vote would go up and Labor’s down. Too many people saw a vote for the Greens as a vote for Labor with added protest. Not a view I ever shared.
This election was different. There were other options for a protest against Labor vote and too many were fooled into thinking PUP was the answer. They were sucked in by Clive’s promise-them-anything spin. The sad thing about it is the probablity of Palmer becoming an MP and control of the senate being in the hands of his minions.
This story somewhat confirms your analysis, Aguirre
http://www.canberratimes.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/hansonyoung-denies-second-leadership-push-20130928-2ul4o.html
There’s a lot of ironies, of course. An interesting denial by SH-Y, who has long had ambition written all over her face. She does seem to be the Greens answer to Paul Howes … and about as popular despite regular media appearances.
I notice that Milne herself confirmed your analysis just after the election result, Aguirre. She said the poor showing of the Greens can be attributed to the decline in the ALP popularity. She just hasn’t taken the next step that bagging the ALP, their support rivals instead of their real opponents, leads to a loss for both.
After Brown’s departure (and occasionally while he was still there) the Greens made a mockery of the so-called alliance by criticising the government , and Gillard in particular, at every turn.
The Greens appear to have had a wave of success before they matured as a significant minor party. Bandt may well survive into the future, but it is more because of the electorate disillusionment with the major parties than anything specifically to do with the Greens now. Where a candidate has a high local profile and is perceived to be acting in the electorate’s interest there is a good chance of kicking on, as we are seeing with independents.
“50 mtr.s from shore”…give it a break!..if those pics of the survivors were correct, that sandy beach would for the first 25mt. be only chest deep, and then the parents would have been able to rescue most of their kids…or are we getting another “children overboard” beat-up!?
Milne claimed that people associated the Greens with the ALP, which led to a fall in support for both. She’s dead wrong there. What people saw was the Greens attacking the ALP, and on quite a few occasions siding with the Coalition to do so. That led to confusion and disillusionment – the spread of votes to independent candidates and minor parties was a protest against that. There was confusion about what the Greens stood for, because they were spending so little time talking about the environment and giving so little credit to a Government that had done something effective about it. The attitude toward them was more one of “why bother?”
I think Adam Bandt is a nob-end. Perfect for his seat, because we’re talking inner Melbourne here and the profile he’s attracting is more soft-socialist than anything else. But that’s not much use for his party as a whole. He’s a fluffy thinker, as the symbolism of his ‘week on the dole’ stunt typifies.

[“50 mtr.s from shore”…give it a break!]
It seems to me that George Roberts’ report that the boat broke up very close to shore is right.
Otherwise it would be very unlikely that the wreckage would turn up on the same spot as the survivors were found and so quickly.
The guy in the back of the Police ute – not very bright and none of it is their fault …. FMD.
Insiders was ok. Watched it for the first time in a couple of months, and that’ll do me for a while. They really don’t add anything to the political landscape. And soft-pedalling the Liberals is an ongoing disgrace for them, but it won’t change any time soon. They seemed to think that the AS issue with Indonesia is insoluble, but that because we might be able to do a trade deal on beef with them it’ll all be ok. I can’t follow the logic of that. It might very well be the other way around – I suppose it depends on how much Indonesia would benefit from a trade deal, but they’re certainly not going to agree to be bent over on AS either way.
They did signpost the way on the Brandis-wedding thing. The media will test out of the angle of “are the ALP being hypocrites over this?” It’s tentative at the moment, but they’ll work on it.
Nevertheless, what we do know about the Abbott-led Coalition is that they make major gaffes at about the rate of one per week. They could be glossed over while they were in opposition because they didn’t do any damage. But they’re a lot harder to bury when you’re in government, because they have consequences. They went into the campaign with half-realised ideas in every policy area and just bluffed their way through the election campaign. Those half-ideas are still no closer to being resolved, and they’re out there in the public domain now, causing chaos. If the Coalition just try to play catch-up with them, the holes will get bigger and bigger.
The AS boat may have broken up close to shore but they must have been in trouble for quite a while.
[Brig. Gen. Tatang Zainudin, the National Search and Rescue Agency’s operation chief, said by phone from the scene. Among those rescued were three Lebanese nationals who were found early Saturday after being stranded on an island about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from where the boat sank, Zainudin said.]
Where-ever and whatever happened to that boat I want to know what and who happened in that 24 hour discrepancy in the story from a survivor and the words of Morrison.
Something stinks in the State, as Shakes said.
According to the survivor, they were in trouble for 24 hours, after the crew abandoned them by getting on another boat after being paid. After that they probably would have drifted with the tides. Remember the survivor said the advised exact GPS co-ordinates.
Wonder how far the boat drifted in the time it was in trouble.
Must have been far, as neither out navy or the other boat could not find them, on the information given.
There an update on the MELBOURNE MEETING thread.
[aturday after being stranded on an island about 20 kilometers (12 miles) ]
The currents are strong along the southern coast. That’s why I suggest that George Roberts is accurate as the wreckage is on the same beach. Indonesian SAR people say that seas were too high for them.
Reports say the engine in the boat failed and then the fuel supply for the motor running the water pumps ran out – boat meet beach.
CTar1
The general I quoted also said the boat originally got in trouble when they were hit by 6 meter waves. So as well as the strong currents you mention the wind and waves would have made for pretty rapid drifting.
Just heard courtesy ABC, an item buried in a news update, that Brandis DH SC will repay the entitlements he erroneously claimed when he attended the wedding.
Michael Smith ought to have a colostomy bag attached to his mouth!…he’s so full of it!
Nice work by Gee at Independent Australia.
Just heard courtesy ABC, an item buried in a news update, that Brandis DH SC will repay the entitlements he erroneously claimed when he attended the wedding.
Not good enough..let “justice” be done as HE required it to be done on Slipper and Thomson!
They were promised help within 2 hours. That 2 hours must have been based on the GPS position.
Has Brandis FW DH apologized yet for being caught with his hand in our pockets?
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-09-29/michael-smith-wedding-barnaby-joyce-george-brandis-expenses/4987502
So why are they paying back … ?
To avoid being treated as they treated Slipper.
jaycee,
Didn’t you see what Peta said: “Justice doesn’t have to be done, just seen to be done.”?
tlbd – My suggestion earlier that the GPS position was given wrongly or transcribed wrongly.
(If you need a small 4yo apply here: my leg has gone to sleep)
Slipper’s offer to repay was refused …
After George Brandis DH “tore up the dance floor” they played.
CTar1,
We have Mr 11, Mr 9 and Miss 7 here. Swap?
Ducky,
Certain words do not form part of the Coalition’s lexicon. Two are sorry and apology / apologise.
You don’t seriously think he would, ducky? This the man who made such a big deal about free speech and freedom of the press until somebody pointed to his record in office last time around.
gd,
I’m certain that that paragon of integrity, Tony Abbott, would insist.
Speaking of The Idiot, I wonder how many items of gent’s underwear Peta is packing for him for Monday.
I heard that Joyce was REFUSING to pay the money back, while Brandis is.
