More precisely, the glory that was Julia.

  1. I’m still highly pissed off about yesterday. I understand and respect the view that we should still vote labor to defend the Gillard legacy. But at the moment, the idea of supporting the rat’s treachery is outweighing my fear of Abbott’s potential legacy.

  2. Thanks for the company last night, folks. Shoulders when you need them.

I shall continue to vote for Andrew Leigh because he is terrific for the electorate of Fraser (and stood with JGPM).

I shall not be joining the ALP.

    Onwards and upwards!

  3. Puffy

Thank you. I was introduced to compassion and community by my father a proud union man. I was introduced to politics by Don Dunstan who visited the School of food and catering in SA when I was an apprentice. He presented the seniors prizes and awards, he delivered a talk (it wasn’t a speech it was a warm and honest talk) telling us of his views of society, where us young people could fit in and our obligations to that society and what we could get from society simply by giving. That was my introduction to the ALP and two days later I visited his local office and joined the party, his staff rang my local member who invited me to his office to welcome me to the ALP. I got a personal card from D.Dunstan a few days later.

Now that is the ALP I joined, ratf*cker knows nothing of the people that have supported the party and cares nothing for them, to him they are a vote that props his power.

To people like Ms Gillard, Mr Whitlam, Mr Dunstan and many of their ilk, society is most importantly a community for all, support for all people…….. that is what the ALP stood for, not to be the tool for people like ratf*cker and his followers to garner some sort of power to nurture their egos.

  4. I am like many ,still grieving over the loss of our PM Julia Gillard- a lady of class, with guts and determination and someone who got things done. Despite how I feel now, I suppose I will eventually vote Labor, if only to stop Abbott BUT if the Liberal’s changed to Malcolm Turnbull, I’d seriously give a consideration as to whether to vote Liberal .

  5. An email from Andrew Leigh:

Last night, the Australian Labor Party caucus met and chose Kevin Rudd as our new Prime Minister. It was a difficult decision for everyone.

In my own case, I voted for Julia Gillard, but I have great respect for the collective wisdom of my colleagues, and will be campaigning every day for the re-election of a Rudd Government.

The big differences in Australia aren’t between individuals in the Labor team they’re between parties.

When we go to the election, the Labor Government will be campaigning to keep a carbon price, to sustain strong investment in schools, and to ensure that the world’s largest network of marine parks stays in place.

Between now and polling day, our challenge will be to make sure that Canberrans aren’t distracted by leadership issues, and that they understand the real choice that faces them at the ballot box.

Will you help by joining me next week to calls voters about the differences between the parties?

    Best wishes,

    Andrew

  6. Examining the figures further, Daniel Andrews’ margin in Mulgrave has been cut more than double, and deputy LOTO James Merlino’s seat of Monbulk has become notionally Liberal too.

Oh, and Napthine’s margin in the South West Coast has been nearly doubled.

On the bright side, the marginal Lib seats of Carrum and Frankston have margins of less than 1%, so they should be easier to win.

Still though, a lot of these numbers are too convenient for the LNP’s side for me to believe that there was no ‘executive meddling’ from the tories.

  7. Catalyst

While I am angry and really disappointed in what has happened and will not vote for the ALP I could never vote for lnp, Have you seen what they do to people particularly the marginalised, turnbull puts on a mild and pleasant exterior but he is as bitter and blackhearted as all tories.

He would leap all over the poor, the disabled, the powerless to take the penny off a dead person’s eyes to pass on to some rich arsehole or tuck in his own waistcoat pocket.

  8. I’m surprised Leigh didn’t mention the LNP’s plans to destroy the ACT economy by slashing the public service. Maybe he didn’t have to, but it doesn’t hurt to remind Canberrans and their hip pockets.

  9. I’ve arranged my own little Mackerras Pendulum for the draft boundaries so far, but it’d take up too much room here, plus Antony Green will probably put his up in a few hours so it’d be unnecessary.

On the draft boundaries, the figures are LNP 46/42 ALP seats. Which, I suppose after thinking about it, is fair. Labor was very lucky to hold 43 seats after a 51.5/48.5 result.

A 50/50 result (as Newspoll currently has it) would net Labor 5 seats – Ballarat, Frankston, Carrum, Monbulk and Bentleigh. So it’s looking okay as far as statewide margins go.

agree I was upset last night I didn’t sleep

but do u know I did the same when Julia took over from rudd
as I didn’t know why, I settled down and supported Julia

I will for the sake of my children and our PENSION DO THE same

don’t expect rudd to be like Julia and don’t expect the next labor pm to be like either of them we are all different
    ITS THE POLCIES THAT COUNT
and our future and our children

  11. Plus Sharon Knight has been a gem of a state MP and is sure to get a sophomore surge in 2014.

  13. The nerve of that man. My reply to KR:

I was astounded to receive your email. I believe that you have been one of the major reasons for negativity for the past three or four years. Julia Gillard was held in utmost esteem by me and I cannot imagine that you will ever come close. You obviously are now beholden to the mass media, especially Murdoch and believe me, all eyes will be on you if you sell this country out to the likes of him – as you were tempted to do with the Australian Network.

Kindly remove my name from your mailing list – ironically, I assume that I am on the list because I sent an email of encouragement to Prime Minister Julia Gillard advising her not to lose heart with the polls as I believed that she would win the next election once the campaign commenced and Parliament had stopped sitting. Unfortunately, a lot of her colleagues did not have the fortitude and courage of Labor’s true convictions.

    A sad day for Australia.

I think antony’s number on South West Coast is wrong as the VEC’s maps aren’t showing any changes to its boundaries.

  15. My (probably too wordy) response to that email:

No retributions, no pay backs, none of that stuff. It is pointless, it is old politics.

What an extraordinary thing to say, after all that has happened. If I were interested enough I would ask who you believe should feel the benefit of this ‘generosity’. Or perhaps you are hoping to deflect any such that may come your way.

During that time the print/radio/television media has been remarkably negative, and remarkably consistent in not reporting the substantial achievements of the Labor Government under PM Gillard. At the same time we have had a constant ‘drip’ of negative articles/suggestions/innuendo claimed to be from ‘inside Labor sources’.

I will be interested to see if this now changes, and whether the media aim still appears to be to manipulate and facilitate the election of a Coalition government.

I will support a local candidate if I am convinced she is truly guided by Labor values, as I believe the achievements of the Gillard Labor Government have been outstanding.

One last comment – among the many photographs taken in the Chamber today, there is one of yourself, the LOTO and the Deputy LOTO apparently overjoyed and laughing heartily together, far beyond what normal courtesies and decorum might require for public consumption.

Put it up if you wish get in before A. Green

  17. @ GL

Ah, it must be an error then.

So as it stands, not much of a change. The regional cities and the Frankston Railway Line seats will be the major battlegrounds of 2014. It’s also good to see that Morwell might be in play as a marginal seat too.

And as Seymour seems to be lost to be forever sat on by a National arse, there’s the new seat of Eildon to watch out for any big regional Liberal backlash.

  18. Welcome to all the New Patrons!

It was in a fit of pique after the last Ruddfucked era that I joined poll bludger and met many of the fantastic people that have now become regulars at the much more polite pub.

It’s a community that has collectively saved my sanity on many occassions!

    Cheers!

  19. Whoever had the job of reading all those email responses must need several stiff whiskies by now. I think what we’ve done is just a small sample of the sort of replies they would have received. Not that Krudd will ever see any of it, he’s much too important to read emails, always was. Some poor public servant would have to do it.

i thought of cancelling those emails but then I decided I could have a lot more fun if I just keep on composing replies. I hope they learn to appreciate my efforts.

  20. I have lost count of how many first timers have showed up at the PUB today.
    Must be the ambience here!

  21. http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/political-news/slipper-allegations-link-hockey-to-ashby-20130627-2ozof.html

Clive Palmer has backed allegations Peter Slipper has made in Parliament that Liberals Joe Hockey and Mal Brough requested the billionaire pay the legal fees of Mr Slipper’s former aide James Ashby.

Joe Hockey has denied the allegations, and demanded Mr Slipper, a former Liberal party member, withdraw the suggestion the shadow treasurer was linked to the Ashby affair.

The controversy began when Mr Slipper rose in Parliament on Thursday to give w

  24. Fiona,Joe, C@tmomma, BB
Collectively and/or individually how are you people holding up?
It’s been a pretty tough ride over the not just last 24 hours but the last 2-3 years.
if you’ve got the strength can you keep on doing what you’ve been doing so well?
I won’t go back to the traitor infested PB site although as I’ve said I’ll still back Labor.
But many of us who have come here need this site.
If the bar’s open tomorrow night, the drinks are on me.
And in fine working man and woman’s tradition, drink up and commiserate to our hearts content.

  25. My question when Clive created the PU Party was how far was he prepared to go to carve up the LNP. Guess I have my answer!

    It’s no hold’s barred!

  26. So now we have Abbott..whose connections to Murdoch and the Ashby/ Slipper affair and the attempt to bring down the govt’ locks him in as a “Traitor to the National Parliament” and opposite him we have Rudd who through his white-anting is a Traitor to his party…..Whilst up in the press-gallery, we have the MSM. group-think journos who have failed to call to account the shennanigans of all the players in this whole sordid saga being Traitors to their duty to the public and the entire theatre being misrepresented by the national broadcaster and the other media outlets who are in effect ; Traitors to their obligation for truth in reporting………Will somebody please let me in on the joke?…..or is this just a warm-up for the Australian reality show version of a Berlusconi Bunga-Bunga party!!?

  27. I had a feeling in my bones that today was reserved by Julia Gillard to reveal some damaging information concerning the LNP. and those Ashby/Slipper / Thomson/ “Egyptian terrorist” investigations etc.
Perhaps Shorten’s connections to Kathy Jackson et all put the nail in the coffin so to speak!

  29. Fiona, thank you for your welcome – my second (smiley face). I’ve been with the pub since the beginning, and shared and appreciated some nice emails with Bushfire Bill at the time. I think my previous infrequent posts here must have been as Helen2 which was my name at PB where I had lurked for several years.

I’d forgotten that, so when I posted something a couple of days ago I just used my full name. The double welcome is appreciated though!

This place really is special thanks to the contributors and the moderators.

  30. Gah, why the hell did I look at The Age?

The top article is Paul Sheehan using sickeningly violent adjectives about Julia Gillard. “Blood” “Guillotine” “Put to the sword”. It’s like it’s some fantasy for him, the freak.
