  1. About Sussan Ley and Sarah Henderson voting against the debate on live sheep exports –

It was very clever of ScumMo to put both women into his ministry as assisaant ministers. That ensured they would not be able to vote against the government should there be a debate on live sheep exports. ScumMo, or more likely one of his wormtongue advisers, knnew this debate would be moved as soon as parliament returned and whispered to the boss about ways to kill it off.

Solidarity among ministers is just a convention, not a rule, but it makes it very unlikely any minister or assistant minister would cross the floor during a vote.

Whether or not Ley and Henderson still want to stop live exports is something no-one seems to have asked them. Someone should ask.

    • They put out a statement. Labor’s fault, it would seem (stop me if you’ve heard that before)

Labor’s actions today were a disingenuous attempt to disrupt parliament masquerading behind the cause of animal welfare.

As members of the ministry, it is no longer open to us to support any Private Member’s Bill or the Bill passed by the Senate today.

Our personal conviction on this issue remains and we will continue to advocate for a change in Coalition policy and for a phase out of this awful trade.

The Private Member’s Bill we introduced on 21 May 2018 to phase out long haul live sheep exports is currently being debated in the House of Representatives.

Combined with advocacy from many thousands of Australians, we are pleased our strong stand along with the minister for agriculture’s determination to hold the regulator to account, has resulted in the shutting down of the industry’s biggest offender. The impending release of the Moss Review provides the government with a further opportunity to impose tough new rules relating to live exports.

      https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/live/2018/sep/10/scott-morrison-bill-shorten-coalition-labor-dutton-politics-live

I thought their bill was withdrawn?!

    • Their bill was withdrawn. The one being debated today was moved in the Senate by the Greens’ Derryn Hinch & Tim Storer, this morning.

Some journalist needs to take them to task for these women to task for their dishonesty. Or for their stupidity in thinking we would fall for their lies. Or both.

    • Someone should certainly ask, Leone. I am sure, however, that both MPs would respond with weasel (or stoat) words.

  2. Leone and Ducky, my sincerest congratulations on your new enterprises. I hope you have as much fun – and education – as I have enjoyed over several exciting years.

    • We just watched it on iview, it was excellent. Let us hope for a change in government before these kids are crushed by this mob so called running Australia.

  4. In case you missed it – ScumMo, yesterday in QT, taking inspiration from a US general.

I recall many years ago being at the Sydney Entertainment Centre and listening to a presentation from Norman Schwarzkopf, and he said:

When placed in command, take charge.

That’s what I propose to do, to take charge…

    https://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Hansard/Hansard_Display?bid=chamber/hansardr/4e7f1988-471a-4bf6-b192-88428bdd117e/&sid=0000

We should be very worried. ScumMo is great for joking about, but don’t forget the serious side. He’s dangerous, more dangerous than Dutton would have been as PM because of his loopy religious beliefs. Morrison wants to be an authoritarian, hard-right leader led by some god or other who he believes is with him.

ScumMo isn’t the first leader to claim a special relationship with God. (Has anyone asked God if he wants ScumMo on his side?)

The Nazis were very big on claiming a similar relationship, insisting God was with them. They even wore that claim on their belt buckles.

  5. Whether or not Lucy Gichuhi would reveal the names of the bullies in the ranks of the Liberal Party was a big question this morning. Turns out she won’t be doing that. To me this implies she has been bullied into keeping quiet. She has proved her point without naming names. There is rampant bullying withing the ranks of the government. The chief bully is the prime minister.

  6. For what it’s worth, today’s full Essential results.

    http://www.essentialvision.com.au/category/essentialreport

How anyone could form an opinion on what ScumMo’s attributes as leader might be after just two weeks and no parliament until yeasterday is beyind me.

I know how Essential does their polling, it’s not what I’d call reliable, but at least the results are close enough to Newspoll to support it. Either both are wide of the mark or both are a fairly accurate depiction of voter intention. Take your pick, any guess would be as valid as either poll.

  7. Veteran cartoonist Mark Knight has rejected suggestions his depiction of Serena Williams is “racist”, saying those condemning him are “making stuff up”.

The cartoon, published in the Herald Sun, was Mr Knight’s take on the controversial US Open final, which Williams lost to Japan’s Naomi Osaka after being given three code violations — one for coaching, one for breaking her racquet and another for verbal abuse of the chair umpire.

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-09-11/cartoonist-mark-knight-defends-serena-williams-depiction/10230044

That cartoon has nothing to do with racism: it has everything to do with a tennis player going troppo.

  8. Things not going well for P.Dud the spud. Accusations of bullying in the LNP. Royal commission digging up all kinds of shit. I wonder when the “look over there” it’s a terrorist will happen.

  9. I have to admit to being awfully conflicted over that Mark Knight cartoon. I don’t know that it’s racist per se, but I do think it’s insensitive. Knight always provides the most simplistic, reactionary take of any current cartoonist, and I almost always find his stuff crude and juvenile. I am almost being forced to take his side here though, simply because of the sheer bulk of people carrying on about Osaka being portrayed as a white woman. She’s clearly not, and it’s been annoying to see people stretching the argument so thin in order to make their point.

My take on it is, “oh well, there’s another idiot Knight cartoon.” It hasn’t added anything to the conversation, and I reckon he’s done it to needle people who in general don’t need a lot of needling. i really prefer a cartoon to provide a fresh take on a topic.

On the question of Williams’ behaviour: it’s complicated. I don’t like seeing anyone acting like a prat on the tennis court because things don’t go their way, and if it was up to me every single one of them would be penalised. She spoilt the final as a spectacle and made it highly embarrassing for everyone involved. I would have liked to have seen her show some remorse for that, no matter how hardly done by she feels she was. The game is bigger than her. But she decided not to do that. Conflating it into a feminist or racial issue now means everyone has to tread very carefully when commenting, which is also a shame. It’s really all about appalling behaviour and how it ought to be dealt with. That’s what I think, anyway.

And her attempts to smooth things over at the presentation were cringeworthy. Her message to Osaka was fundamentally, “this is a difficult situation, but we’ll get through it.” As if she was in no way responsible for what had happened. She should have been apologising to Osaka, not jollying her along. Show some humility in defeat instead of continuing to make it all about you.

    • I am almost being forced to take his side here though, simply because of the sheer bulk of people carrying on about Osaka being portrayed as a white woman. She’s clearly not, and it’s been annoying to see people stretching the argument so thin in order to make their point.

I’ve seen far more people take issue with him making Serena Williams look like one of those racist caricatures of African Americans from the 1930s.

  10. All these Coalition people constantly whimpering and screaming about how awful it would be to have Bill Shorten as Prime Minister should ask the 2010-13 Labor government how well that went for them when they said the same about Abbott. Only of course in Labor’s case they were correct.

Still though, here’s hoping they keep it up until election day, I’d like the wipeout to include at least Hastie and all the other grubs on a lower margin than that.

  11. When she played against Serena Williams Naomi Osaka had her hair pulled back into a pony tail. The ends of her hair are bleached.

So Knight is correct in drawing her with a blond ponytail.

Here’s Naomi with her hair out.

Did anyone bother to check this before they jumped straight into being outraged?

I don’t think Knight’s cartoon is racist, you could argue it was sexist, but it’s just typical Knight. Never forget – he works for NewsCorpse and follows editorial directions.

  12. More bullying, this time in the Queensland LNP.

LNP MPs warned they risk political future voting for Labor’s abortion bill

QUEENSLAND’S LNP MPs have been warned they could be putting their political future with the party at risk if they support Labor’s abortion decriminalisation Bill.

The Courier-Mail can reveal LNP president Gary Spence spoke with MPs about the looming debate on the Bill during a party room meeting last month.

It isunderstood Mr Spence did not specifically tell MPs how they should vote but he did say they could be putting themselves at risk of having their preselection to run again at the October 2020 State Election overturned by the LNP’s powerful State Council

    https://outline.com/NJzq35

Why are so many male politicians afraid to agree women should be able to have safe, legal terminations? I just don’t get it.

  13. What the Libs really think of women – “dregs”.

Morris apologised, and it was actually a proper apology, not just the usual “If you were offended then i’m sorry for that”.

Sky might as well set aside a special time each week for apologies, there are so many being made. It would be a better idea for Sky to sack these aging RWNJs. Sky is home to far too many failed politicians and former staffers of politicians.

  14. Good morning Dawn Patrollers.

Labor drops opposition to Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal
Caucus and shadow cabinet agree to pass TPP, but also change the way Australia negotiates on trade

Labor has agreed to pass government legislation enabling the Trans-Pacific Partnership, leading minor parties to accuse the opposition of selling out after months of criticising the deal.

Labor’s trade spokesman, Jason Clare, overcame left faction and union objections to negotiate support for the TPP-11 through shadow cabinet on Monday evening and caucus on Tuesday, with a suite of measures to change the way Australia negotiates trade deals when Labor retakes government.

In a statement Clare promised Labor would introduce laws that prohibit governments from signing trade agreements that waive labour market testing or include investor-state dispute settlement provisions (ISDS) which allow foreign companies to sue the Australian government for policy changes.

Labor’s support means the TPP legislation can pass the Senate, despite Centre Alliance and the Greens’ opposition to the government bill

  16. Adani is in trouble again.

Now they are drilling bores and squandering water without any Queensland government approval. I bet Premier Annastacia is regretting all those happy snaps she posed for with Gautam Adani. We tried to tell her it was a bad idea, she wouldn’t listen.

Adani groundwater bores investigated amid claims they were sunk without approval

The Queensland environment department has launched an investigation into a series of groundwater bores drilled by Indian miner Adani, which conservationists say were sunk without approval.

The environmental group Coast and Country has obtained high resolution satellite and drone imagery which it says shows the “illegal” works at the site of Adani’s controversial Carmichael coal mine project in north Queensland.

“Adani have sunk six dewatering bores,” said the group’s Derec Davies.

“They’ve needed approval, a groundwater approval, for these bores. They don’t have that.

“They’ve drilled into Great Artesian Basin aquifers, they’ve put at risk our groundwater particularly at a time when half the country’s in drought.”

Dewatering bores are used in mining operations to depressurise the coal seam and to lower groundwater levels for open cut and underground operations.

The company has told the ABC that it is abiding by the conditions of the Carmichael project’s approvals

  17. Counting is proceeding veeery slowly

The official result from the weekend’s Wagga Wagga by-election has been delayed partly due to how close the outcome is.

The Liberal and Labor parties have conceded defeat to independent candidate Joe McGirr following Saturday’s poll but the NSW Electoral Commission is yet to officially announce the winner.

That was expected to happen tomorrow morning but has now been pushed back until Friday afternoon at the earliest.

  18. Was phone polled by the Victorian Liberals tonight. 1st question was what state issues I was concerned about, 2nd was my voting intention, 3rd was whether or not Daniel Andrews was too close to the Greens.

It’s probably a private poll so we might not know the results, but I have to say the Liberals are really going for that hypermasculine he-man image all the way in everything, the prerecorded bloke sounded like Alan Jones on one of his puffed up monologues.

    • I was always under the impression that an unbiased Poll always asked who you would vote for before any other question so as not to influence your response to any further questions.

  21. Canavan ridicules climate health report, days after climate health expert wins Liberal safe seat

Another hint that people might actually care about climate action was delivered over the weekend, via the Liberal Party’s resounding defeat in the NSW Riverina seat of Wagga Wagga, held by the Libs since 1957.

As we reported here, the closely watched by-election was won by Independent Joe McGirr, a medical doctor and professor at the University of Notre Dame who is a proud supporter of climate action and renewable energy.

As it would happen, one of his areas of research expertise is the very subject of the Queensland government report, on which he co-authored a paper in 2014, titled “Preparing rural general practitioners and health services for climate change and extreme weather.”

  22. Yep.

  23. Adani has ditched plans to build a new rail line from Abbot Point to get coal out of Queensland’s Galilee Basin, opting for a cut-price solution using existing lines.

The Indian miner had planned to build a new 388km line from its controversial Carmichael mine to Abbot Point for export, but now says it will “instead leverage existing rail infrastructure”.

The new proposal will make use of the existing Aurizon rail infrastructure that runs to Abbot Point. A new narrow-gauge rail line of about 200 km would be constructed to connect the existing network to the Carmichael mine site, reducing the length of the track Adani would have to build by 188km, and significantly reducing the cost.

Adani’s original proposal was for a 388km standard gauge track that was expected to cost $2.3bn.

The move follows the Queensland government’s decision to veto any federal loan to support that aspect of the project.
