Running Shockingly Late Friday Evening Post

Oh my ears and whiskers. I’ve only just made it home, and have a million things to do. So this will have to do as the thread-starter for the moment. I will add bits and pieces as the evening progresses.

  1. A little bit of random trivia I spotted while doing a bit of random biography Googling . Bob Hawke was elected on the 5th of March. His dad Clem was born on the 5th of March . What a birthday present Bob gave his dad that day. Truly a sensational day…………… my birthday as well 😆

Also young Bobby Hawke was nearly a kiwi. His parents were posted to NZ for a number of years but were moved back to Sth Australia the year before wee Bob was born.

  2. Gippsland Laborite

” that article Ed Husic is one of those mentioned who is standing up for Shorten, ”

This from his wiki entry will explain that,

” In 1998, he was elected as vice-president of the Communications Division of the AWU”

  3. Ahh!…Saturdee night..bath night…got the bar of soap in my pocket..ready to go!

  4. SBS has footage from inside Guantanamanus.

    I hope they show more.

  5. ” I want Leone next to me when we go over the top.”…an I’ll be right behind you, duck!

  6. “The Abbott government is about to divulge its plan for developing the North of Australia”.

    Oh dear!

  7. Speaking of non black ducks. Back in the day we had chooks and ducks on the farm . Most of the ducks were Muscovy but by accident we acquired some Aylesbury ducks. Loved them to bits. Kicked up enough stink that Muscovys were the only ones on the menu .

  8. jaycee,

I will not ever trust written language, these days or its reportage.

    I want face-to-face.

My I say that, as of now, I have met about a dozen here in The Pub. I have looked the eye in conversation and they are to be trusted. You know then; you just know.

  9. And, gravel, if anyone should be in the least concerned about my whereabouts then one moderator knows that I’m out of here.

  10. Al

Ta, noted that down. Doesn’t seem to be any decent eatery in Clare itself!

  11. I know you heathen lot don’t care about soccer but for the rest of you I have found a replay of the European final.

For the rest of us – Lionel Messi did not score but he was THE influence.

  13. I’ve been listening to Muse “Drones” again, perhaps now with a more sympathetic ear now that I’ve “fixed” my gremlin-ridden volume control. (Skip the quoted bit if uninterested.)

It doesn’t reach “10” or “11” – it maxes out at “5” and is “5” all the way up… Turning the knob all the way up (bypassing the pot) and setting the software volume very low keeps the overall volume stable and manageable.

This may be the “dark horse” track. It’s not an official “single”, but stands out stylistically:

  14. Turning the knob all the way up (bypassing the pot) and setting the software volume very low keeps the overall volume stable and manageable.

.. but headphones need the PC volume turned all the way up. *sigh*

  15. (That said, “Psycho” still needs to be turned up to 11…)

The distorted vocals reminded me of Collide’s version of “Song of a Preacher Man”; worth watching for the crazy fight sequence:

  16. A book I’d ordered a couple of weeks ago arrived today.

I won’t say anything about it now – too chilling a topic on a cold night.

    So, sweet dreams to all.

Not sure how to post a link, or if it’s already been posted. I haven’t read the whole article yet, but I’m certainly looking forward to seeing if/how our ne responds to his leader’s letter when it is issued, and if/how the MSM ‘reports’ the ne’s responses.

I wonder if this could be the beginnings of a significant moment in our political history..

  21. CTar1

What was the immediate atmosphere around the office when after weeks of living on adrenalin and coffee/tea it stopped ?

  22. It’s hard to not loudly groan “Oh FFS” to see Liberals all over the internet that think Bill Shorten appearing at the royal commission automatically means that he is guilty.

These people are so dangerous to democracy. If they had their way, Shorten would be forced to the RC in chains, poked along by men holding spears and/or Dementors from Harry Potter, then led straight to the gallows, all for the “horrendous unforgivable” crime of opposing Tony Abbott.

  23. kk – Also lots of talk about the logistics of moving the troops back as we’re minus several large RFA troop movers.

And how to harden up the Type 42 Destroyers.

  24. Abbott is going to ignore the Pope’s encyclical. Pell did not follow the Vatican line on climate change when he was here, he supported Abbott’s ‘climate change is crap’ view.

Let’s get one thing clear – Abbott is no Catholic/Christian. He just likes to have his fans think he is. He left the priesthood because the church would not run the seminary the way he wanted it run. He won’t take any notice of what the Pope says.

  25. Professor Grayson –
“There is absolutely no excuse. All children should be vaccinated for measles.” he said. “Any parent that does not get their child vaccinated for measles is brain dead.”

Exactly. Telling it like it is. Give the man a medal!

Just wait until Bill Shorten gives evidence to the Royal Commission. From what I can work out from whiney pineys shrill whinging, the employer deducted the union dues from the wages and forwarded them to the union. Just as my union did when I was in the public service. It was common until Howard, I think, stopped it and made unionists set up auto deductions from bank accounts instead. (to try to reduce union membership) and thereby the member incurred bank fees.

The deductions showed up on your group certificate as a tax deductible from your income tax but they were your income earned before they were disbursed to pay your dues.

Pyne as usual is the rat chasing a shadow up a drainpipe.

I wish you luck up there with it.

I’ve had a couple of tries in Canberra.

  32. This is a terrible weed – the wild passion fruit creeper. It invades all its surroundings and climbs on all the trees. Find the roots and pull them all out.

  33. Visas without fees will also be provided to tourists from Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Macau Special Administrative Region, Chile, Morocco, Peru, Vietnam, Ecuador, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar.

New Zealand is also on the list, but not its close neighbor Australia, whose relationship with Indonesia has recently deteriorated following the executions of two Australian drug convicts. –

  34. Australia Stoops to ‘New Low’ if Boat Payment Confirmed, Says Indonesia

“Under Australian’s push-back policy we have been consistently saying they are on a slippery slope,” Indonesian foreign ministry spokesman Armanatha Nasir told Reuters on the sidelines of a conference.

“Should this situation be confirmed and it turns out to be true, it would be a new low for the way the government of Australia handles the situation on irregular migration.”

Nasir said it would be the first time such an incident occurred involving Australian authorities

Here’s a question no-one seems to have asked. Do our navy and customs ships usually carry thousands of dollars in cash?

Her’s another one – If they do, then how many times already have we handed over ‘go away’ money?

  35. Even Turkey can do better than this current govt:

“In supporting Syrian refugees in attending university, Turkey is investing in the future because it prevents them from becoming a lost generation, and encourages them to contribute to their homeland’s reconstruction once they return,” Metin Corabatir, former spokesman for the U.N. refugee agency UNHCR in Turkey, told Al Arabiya News.
