I’d be curious to what US-Australian relations would be if Abbott gets up too. Obama clearly had a close personal friendship with Julia Gillard, undoubtedly he’d be less than happy with Abbott for the way he treated her.
No doubt Tonka was gurning like Sophie after being told to stop messing around and do some real work for a change.
Over the road the wingnuts are now characterizing Rudd’s attention to the situation in Syria as empty grandstanding, presumably when he could be kissing babies, wearing fluoro jackets or committing the sin of Gaffe by standing in front of photos of Hitler and Stalin for the Murdoch cameras.
It seems that, if you really want to strut your National Security credentials, you perform calisthenics with the troops (as long as they don’t get too uppity and start answering your questions in a non-approved manner)and employ heavyweights like Julie Bishop to flutter her eyelids at Heads Of State, giving them that “Come hither” look that all men find utterly irresistable, rendering them putty in her cougar claws.
Because Rudd had not single-handedly solved the Syrian crisis by noon today, our membership of the UN Security Council is being derided as a pointless exercise in national grandstanding, way above our pay grade as a primary producer, digger of holes in the ground and slagger-off of wogs, dagoes, seppos and chinks, fit only to go on the dole, cause strife at our beaches, pick our fruit and lose their shirts in our casinos.
There’s a strange disconnect between this Triumphalist Australia – where we are God’s Own Country, entitled to beat our chests about how wonderful we are (wonderful enough not to demand of others that international riff-raff should not touch our treasured shores) and 2GB’s Australia, where pensioners are eating cat food, nobody has a job, old ladies are under attack from Muslim TV antenna and set-top-box installers who want to get into their roof and spy on them, the stock market is in ruins and the national debt has crippled confidence and commerce.
The Punters see no cognitive dissonance in any of this. They love to hate, and they hate to love. They have a general feeling of contempt for Labor, seeing everything it has accomplished either as cynical spin, useless spending, getting above our station in life as a nation, wasted money on bludgers, cadavers and public tit-sucking scientists.
When asked this morning about her feeling, as a legal guardian, concerning losing the Schoolkids Bonus – about $1,500 a year combined for my two grandsons – their grandmother in Wauchope this morning said “Good riddance! It’s just more Labor bullshit and waste… and don’t get me on about Rob Oakeshotte!” I didn’t dare to. Every word she utters about the government and Oakeshotte’s role in the last three years is laced with vitriol and intense hatred. She thrives on it. She’s a Ray Hadley listener and devoted acolyte.
So, something as pointy-headed as our participating in the United Nations Security Council, in some kind of effort to avoid yet another war in the Middle East (this time with Russia definitely, and pointedly supporting the other side) would be anathema to her. Just another grandstanding job. We can’t do anything, it’s not our place to participate in this rotten world, so why should we even try?
I’m afraid the negativism now has become a habit. The haters have lost sight of the reason for their hatred. It’s lurking somewhere in the mists of time, along with their youth and whatever vestiges of idealism they may have once possessed. Their greatest pleasure is to knock, mock and heckle, to pull down any achievement and then whinge about their lot, while slagging off foreigners who offer us advice or counsel, or to whom we may return the favour.
It’s gotterdammerung out there. Australia has become the hating nation, the bragging nation. Not easy going and languid, relaxed and laconic. It’s consuming itself with hatred and the lynch mob mentality, where anything decent and fair is seen as a tall poppy ripe for the cutting.
Murdoch has done it, and with him those who thought he could be controlled and even befriended, and who threw in their lot with him. He’s a destroyer of national pride, rendering everything to its basest, lowest, common denominator: crudity, malevolence, greed, overweening, empty pride, jingoism and pure hatred borne of envy.
I didn’t think it possible that this ogre from New York could once again fool a nation, any nation, into thinking he has its interests at heart, but he seems to have done so. There’s something in human beings that’s there, lurking, ready to be exploited by whomever has no shame and overwhelming megalomania. The monster in our souls gave us the tragedies of Auschwitz, the Burma Railroad and Rwanda, as well as the absurdities of the Page-3 Girl, Fox News, the Daily Telegraph and the endless hunt for gaffes and minor juxtapositions that can be blown up into nation-threatening crises of “character”.
That’s where we are right now, with two weeks to go before one of the most egregious, pugilistic, lying buffoons in Australian political history gets to strut the stage as the country’s Prime Minister.
I can’t help thinking the people who vote for him deserve everything they get, but why do others have to suffer alongside them?
Kirsdarke
Abbott will do what the yanks tell him to. There biggest fear would be him setting off a diplomatic row from one of his brain fart ideas to do with boats. Obama will have no time for him, it will all be polite chit chat & close the White House door on your way out mate.
“Their” biggest fear – gawd.
Somehow, I don’t think TA will tour the world. He’s already said he’d stay home. The thing is he must know that they’ve been laughing at him overseas on many occasions.
Kiwi PM John Key also got on very well with JG. After Rudd was returned he asked JG and Tim to come and stay with he and his wife at their holiday home. I don’t think he would have much time for TA. Key may be a tory but he more the social liberal, financial conservative type
Our nation will suffer a surfeit of embarrassments if Abbott and his really hopeless crew get in.
bushfire – another cracking read, ta.
Well, if we end up with the abbott, I really, really hope that every journalist in the country who’ve actively backed him will pay the highest price of all. May they all rot in the hell of their own making.
To me the feeling has been that labor have been campaining for the last 3 years, rolling out policy after policy passing bills getting the job done in minority.Maybe their just worn out.We need to remember what we have achieved. What else can a government do to to help its people?
ps, as well as the termite and his little lot of undermining munchers.
Does anyone know where you can download/get a copy of the NSW senate ballot paper for pre election scrutiny? I want to make sure I get all the right wing nut job candidates down the bottom.
Questions and fudged answers from Abbott’s presser this morning – finally, after 18 months, a journalist asks Abbott about Ashby/Slipper.
QUESTION:
A question, while you are here with Christopher Pyne, we have seen some further allegations made by Clive Palmer regarding the Peter Slipper case. Are you confident that Mal Brough has nothing further to answer on that case?
TONY ABBOTT:
They are very old allegations. It seems that they have been recycled for electioneering purposes. They have been denied now, as they were denied in the past.
QUESTION:
Have you spoken to Mr Brough?
TONY ABBOTT:
Not recently on this, no.

While doing this wikipedia project getting the election results up, it’s kind of interesting the bits of info picked up along the way.
For one thing, apparently Queensland Premier Rob Borbidge contested the Victorian state election in 1976 as the National candidate for Ripon, but lost to the Liberal.
And also, Alan Jones tried to get in at the New South Wales 1978 election as the Liberal candidate for Earlwood after losing it at the by-election before, but thankfully the voters saw him for what he was and the seat stayed in the Labor margin.
And lastly I’m learning about the political landscape of places I’m not familiar with. Like Sydney with its blue ribbon north shore, the DLP strongholds in Melbourne that kept Bolte in power for that long and how in reality there are very few safe seats in Brisbane.

Go here, scroll down for the ballot paper –

The bottom link on the right hand side – Senate group voting tickets – will show you where everyone is directing their preferences.
Cheers leone.

The senate paper is doing my head in. The other day this appeared on IA.
http://www.independentaustralia.net/2013/politics/saving-your-senate-vote/
I checked the legislation, and it seems kosher. I’m seriously thinking of adopting this method. I just need to work out who is worth voting for after Labor.
Far out, there won’t be many punters voting below the line. Why are there so many candidates this election?
leone
I agree but I’d want to make double sure that doesn’t make my vote informal.
Yeah, it’s ridiculous. And if I recall, there was legislation put in place to try and prevent this from happening, by doubling the fee required to get on the ballot paper. That has obviously not worked well.
I think what’s needed is maybe modify the senate voting process a bit. Maybe optional preferential voting for below the line? That way you can still vote ‘1’ for the party you want and end up having it exhaust rather than have the preferences flow to elect someone like Pauline Hanson.
Oh well. I’m capable of counting to 96 for the Victorian senate tablecloth, so I’m not breaking the below the line habit yet.
mike
Same here.
Kirksdale, I was a member of the Earlwood branch at that time. Remember it well. We had a good member, Ken Gabb. Nice to know I helped beat Gloria
There are too many right-wing nutter groups on the NSW senate paper and some of Labor’s preference deals are very dodgy. It’s time the electoral Act was amended to make it possible to vote for a minimum number below the line instead of the whole damn lot.
My personal opinion
If Abbott wins, (and I think he may lose) I won’t be running away ,moving overseas etc.
The world will go on and Australia will survive. We survived 4 terms of Howard and came back.
While i understand people,s frustrations and feelings , this a friendly place to express your views which is not censored,.
I don,t think this site would be allowed in some countries.
Please remember that if labor lose, that is democracy at work and the majority have voted and thank whoever that we at least have the chance to have a say who governs us.
If Libs win it will only be for 3 years anyhow after Abbott stuffs up so much.
Ah, here’s Antony Green’s article on it.
http://blogs.abc.net.au/antonygreen/2013/02/raising-the-bar-on-nominating-for-the-2013-federal-election.html#more
Whoever wins, hopefully the effectiveness of that legislation will be looked into.

Have 16 more numbskulls to figure out in NSW, 110 candidates. We have 2 candidates for the ‘Pirate Party’?
der, 14 that is.
Yeah, it’s not surprising the Pirate Party has spread to Australia. Online piracy is quite a contentious issue with young people.
Incidentally, the Pirates might have a vital role in the German election on 22 Sep. As it is, the right and left coalitions look about dead even in polls, and they might be heading for a hung parliament with the pirates holding the balance of power. That could be interesting, but in Germany the right and left hate each other less than they do here and they might be forced into another grand coalition.
Ah, nobody does born to rule quite as well as the poms. This week the minister for civil society warned that young people no longer have the tenacity to follow in his suit. His CV and life of true grit and unceasing tenacity ? Nick Hurd.

“While i understand people,s frustrations and feelings , this a friendly place to express your views which is not censored,.

Wise words.
I heard somewhere once WTTE – it stands to reason that if you can be told what to say & read, then you can be told what to think.
Come whatever post September 7 we at least know that a good proportion of this country have not been told what to think & will read & say what they like – life goes on.
I know, I seem ridiculous in saying things like that, but if this country proves it can be manipulated into voting for an incompetent vile man who got through life bullying everyone he saw as inferior, who hasn’t got any vision apart from hurting people he hates then my love for this country would be diminished to say the least.
Of course I’m not ‘definitely’ going to go away, but I’ll see how things go, and if my worst fears come true that Abbott as PM takes Australia down a path that lashes out against and demeans anything that isn’t a white heterosexual male, and breaks down society into petty selfish individualism, then maybe going overseas would be an attractive option.
Kirsdarke
You are not ridiculous.
You are expressing your feelings which is a great thing to be able to do.
It seems the Irish have been migrating here in droves, so much so that their government is now trying to lure them back. An Abbott government should help with that.

Abbott’s plans for the aged? Make them flog off thier homes and live off the proceeds instead of getting a pension. The Young Liberals are keen on the idea.

Great occasions do not make heroes or cowards; they simply unveil them to the eyes of men. Silently and imperceptibly, as we wake or sleep, we grow strong or weak; and at last some crisis shows what we have become.

Should he win the election I don’t think it will that long before the country experiences first hand the mettle of Mr Abbott. He will be found wanting.
Leone @ 5:02
Perhaps a ready made use for all the boats Scoot wants to buy.
Leone,
I bet most Young Libs would be a bit miffed if Mummy and Daddy sold off the family home and spent all that lovely loot on themselves.
A post before watching the wobblies.
This morning’s ABC radio news full of Qld marginals 60-40 libs and Rudd behind in his own seat.
I think this is a deliberate tactic to say to people “..even though you want Rudd there’s no point voting for him because he’s going to lose his own seat.”
Can anyone here say that Murdoch wouldn’t use his polling company to his political advantage?
On the Abbott brainfarts and projection of failings that he does.
I think it’s delliberate.
It’s tactic to distract Rudd and ALP from the main issues. Get us wasting time on twitter, blog sites, press conferences talking about nothing things when we should be focussing on our major reforms, the empty cupboard of Lib policies and the lack of their costings.
From what I can gather our leadership isn’t being distracted.
As much as I favour JG over Rudd I think people like Hawker etc are savvy enough to be guiding Rudd well and I don’t believe any of the bullshit put out by our opposition who incidentally own the means of communication, that there are problems in our campaign.
I still predict a win for ALP because Abbott is unelectable
One small consolation if Abbott wins the election is that he will be kept under some control by the existing Senate for the first nine months of his term. After 1 July 2014 the balance in the
Senate could be held by Madigan and Xenephon so anything could happen.Abbott says if he wins he expects the Parliament to respect his mandate and pass the PPL and the rescission of the Carbon Price. The same way he respected Rudd’s mandate for an ETS in 2007, I hope.
The way my screen is displaying The Pub just now, I have an arrow directing me to “Older Commen” which I keep reading as “Older CONmen”.
I’m wondering where all these aged former home owners are supposed to live once they have flogged off the family home. Under bridges?
I keep finding myself agreeing with Bob Ellis lately, which is weird –

Leone
Pay rent to LNP supporters until it’s gone, then under bridges.
Wobblies time.
NZ anthem is good
Thanks, Joe.
I was just thinking that I might have seemed immature in saying that I’d leave if I didn’t get my way in the election, as many hardliners on either side say they’ll do.
Leone,
Perhaps I am weird because I often agree with Bob Ellis. IMO he mostly frames his opinions in a satirical way and often is misinterpreted and made fun of but I can usually fathom his thinking.
[I’m wondering where all these aged former home owners are supposed to live once they have flogged off the family home. Under bridges?]
If they are Liberal voters who frequent a certain website over the road then probably, yes 😉
