The PUB 13th Anniversary

Now that things are wrapping up for Christmas-New Year in 2025, this might now be a good time for a new post.

We’ve been here for 13 years now, so while politics are about as relevant as some random wasp nest that can frankly sort itself out at this moment, let’s just maybe hold this time to be something of a break and wish everyone a good holiday season.

13 is an unlucky number, yes, but perhaps with superstitions like this, we can overcome that by openly defying it by not paying any meaningful attention to it? 2026 has a lot of potential one way or another.

Hopefully everyone here has a great Christmas-Holiday-New Year period in the next month.

  9. Visitors welcome to the USA of A. NOT!

Tourists to the United States would have to reveal their social media activity from the last five years, under new Trump administration plans.

The mandatory new disclosures would apply to the 42 countries whose nationals are currently permitted to enter the US without a visa, including longtime US allies Britain, France, Australia, Germany and Japan.

In a notice published on Tuesday, the US Customs and Border Protection agency (CBP) said it would also require any telephone numbers used by visitors over the same period, and any email addresses used in the last decade, as well as face, fingerprint, DNA and iris biometrics. It would also ask for the names, addresses, birthdates and birthplaces of family members, including children.

CBP said the new changes to the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (Esta) application were required in order to comply with an executive order issued by Donald Trump on the first day of his new term. In it, the US president called for restrictions to ensure visitors to the US “do not bear hostile attitudes toward its citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles”.

The plan would throw a wrench into travel for the World Cup, which the US is co-hosting with Canada and Mexico next year. Fifa has said it expects to attract 5 million fans to the stadiums, and millions more visitors to the US, Canada and Mexico.

Tourism to the US has already dropped dramatically in Trump’s second term, as the president has pushed a draconian crackdown on immigrants, including recent moves to ban all asylum claims and to stop migration entirely from more than 30 countries.

    • The ‘Welcome to Murica’ ceremony also includes……………

Applicants would also have to provide additional information “when feasible,” according to the proposal. The list includes telephone numbers used in the last five years, email addresses used in the last 10 years, IP addresses and metadata from electronically submitted photos, and biometrics, including facial, fingerprint, DNA and iris data.

It would also require applicants to provide information about their family members, including names, telephone numbers, dates of birth, places of birth and residences.

Because that is always what moves politicians – fear. Fear they’ll lose the electorates, their jobs, their futures, with not enough time to reverse opinion.

Those fears, or at least concerns, within Labor are growing. Not that it will lose government – on the numbers, the Coalition winning the next election is as likely as me being named the next Bond girl – but that it will lose more seats than first anticipated.

There are about 18 nervous backbenchers who have decided they quite like their jobs. A summer in their electorates, hearing directly from those who put them there, and not what their party leaders are telling them are wins, should at least give them pause.

Because if Labor is to act at all on what needs to be done, then it only has next year. The year after that is straight back into election mode, when reforms tend to be short term and even shorter-sighted.

………………..they felt pressured to conclude that campuses had violated the civil rights of Jewish students and staff.

In interviews over several weeks, the career attorneys — who together served dozens of years — said they were given the instructions at the onset of the investigations. All nine attorneys resigned during the course of their UC assignments, some concerned that they were being asked to violate ethical standards.

“Initially we were told we only had 30 days to come up with a reason to be ready to sue UC,” said Ejaz Baluch, a former senior trial attorney who was assigned to investigate whether Jewish UCLA faculty and staff faced discrimination on campus that the university did not properly address. “It shows just how unserious this exercise was. Our mission is simple and unwavering: ZAKA is there for every Jew, no matter where they are, in times of crisis.

We bring deep experience from terror scenes, working hand-in-hand with law enforcement to preserve critical forensic evidence, while also ensuring the dead are treated with the utmost dignity and can be buried as quickly as possible in accordance with Jewish law.

That he deserves to get one is a “lay down misère”.

He may also be up for the Royal Humane Society’s Gold Medal. Although that depends on if what he did fits the bolded bit below . The ‘another’ may refer to the rescue of specific individual(s) rather than ‘generic’ saving people.

The Royal Humane Society Gold Medal recognizes conspicuous bravery in extreme peril, awarded for risking one’s life to save another, requiring documented evidence of extreme danger, often beyond the call of duty for professionals, assessed by expert committees, and typically submitted within 12 months of the incident.

It was truly a big surprise to find such an article being published. Rare as hen’s teeth at the moment.
