Newspoll: 57-43 to Labor (October 2025)

Rather than doom and gloomerism for the Progressive side of politics, I think instead a better move tonight would be to reflect on how good Labor has gone over this past year of tumultuous international politics.

Let’s compare tonight’s Newspoll results to the Federal Election results in May.

Labor: 37% (+2.5)
Coalition: 28% (-4.0)
Greens: 12% (0.0)
One Nation: 11% (+5.0)
Other: 12% (-3.0)

2PP: Labor 57-43 (+2 to Labor since the election, indicating they’d likely gain seats as things are now).

Now, we are of course aware of things in America. There’s really nothing we can do for those poor souls over there. But for what we can do over here in Australia, there’s lots we can do.

I can’t pretend to preach much since I haven’t done much to connect with community, and, this is the part where I think I’d like to ask for advice as to how we can do better here and not hurtle toward the same fate as the USA and the UK.

Personally I want to see a scenario where Australia is MAGA-proofed at least until the 2030’s, and even then, what the Labor government does can’t be as easily repealed as the Carbon and Mining taxes were, and also a significant social change from what John Howard gave us.

  1. A reminder of how long this has been going on. The biggest sinners were the @#$@!!! The Rodent and the #$#%#! Hammock Dweller as they were around when some of the largest projects went ahead. No surprise there .

Australia is exporting itself gas poor, plans LNG import terminals

    BY MATT

     – JULY 25, 2018 POST ED IN AUSTRALIAAUSTRALIAN NATURAL GAS

3 complacent governments (Howard, Rudd/Gillard, Abbott) released 3 flawed Energy White Papers (2004,  2012 and 2015) which have promoted and facilitated massive LNG export projects on Australia’s West, North and East Coasts. On the East Coast, on-shore coal seam gas is used as feedstock and that has caused a domestic gas crisis as conventional gas production is peaking since 2000, something already Howard knew it would happen. So we have the bizarre situation that Australia plans to build LNG import terminals on the East Coast, for domestic use.

What an embarrassment for a government where the Chief Economist is proud to announce Australia to be the 2nd largest LNG exporter in the world:

2012, the Gillard government ruled out a domestic gas reservation policy, rejecting a manufacturing task force’s recommendation to reserve a portion of gas for Australian use. The government argued that such a policy would deter investment and create uncertainty, opting instead for a free-market approach

  2. Must be piss me off day. This time the @#@$ BBC. Several countries have boycotted Eurovision due to Israel’s continued genocidal activities. The BBC defends their attendance with this and I quote

This is about enforcing the rules of the EBU and being inclusive.”

Playing nice with nations committing genocidal war crimes is being ‘inclusive’ , truly amazing. I know one thing that should be boycotted, any and all the PR peasants who wrote that and any manager who approved it.

Talk grows about new movement to replace ‘irretrievable’ Liberals

With the Liberal Party at one of its lowest ebbs with voters, some disaffected members are starting to think a new political movement might be the answer.

Okay, for the folks who asked: here's the majority AI view, writing up the reasonable, thoughtful view on AI that the vast majority of people in tech hold, that gets overshadowed by the bluster and hype of the tycoons trying to shill their nonsense. anildash.com/2025/10/17/t… Please share!

  4. The Muricans have just released a shiny new ‘National Security Strategy’. The so called ‘Wolfowitz Doctrine’ is now completely dead buried and cremated (YAY). Some reality seeped in. After the fall of the USSR they were the sole remaining superpower, the ‘Wolfowitz policy’ was to ensure this status remained and allow no competitors to arise, whatever it took. Apparently the permanent domination of the globe was vital to US interests . Somewhat amazing that it took until a shonk like Trump was in power for them to accept it was all bullshit. Not that he had much choice, maintaining an Empire can become cripplingly expensive and they ain’t so flush as they used to be.

For AUKUS fans some sad news, the ‘Indo-Pacific’ is now of secondary concern and the Western Hemisphere + Homeland is where the action is. The ‘Globo-Cop’ now more ‘Neighbourhood Cop’. China has been rebadged from ‘existential threat’ to ‘economic competitor’. Not to worry, we’ll still get to piss the best part of a $Trillion up against the walls for what will no doubt turn out to be white elephant submarines.

  5. I have never thought much of FIFA. Now …

Donald Trump has been named the first winner of the newly created Fifa peace prize, claiming “the world is a safer place now” as he received the award at the draw for the 2026 World Cup in Washington DC.

Gianni Infantino, the Fifa president and one of Trump’s closest sporting allies, presented the honour onstage at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, saying Trump had been selected “in recognition of his exceptional and extraordinary actions to promote peace and unity around the world”.

  6. Trump being given a “Peace Prize” for what he’s done so far would much be like Hitler being given a “Peace Prize” for claiming the Sudetenland. And then invading the rest of Czechoslovakia a few months later.

Seeing the media just nod along and accept all of this without question is the most sickening thing about this.

  10. Queensland Museum accused of misleading teachers and children about the cause of climate change

Now how could that come about ? Quelle surprisement……….. Not !

Shell’s Queensland Gas Company has been sponsoring the museum’s Future Makers learning program since 2015 and produces teaching materials as well as running free professional development courses for teachers.

The Quinceland government seem to be OK with that or else they’d have surely ‘done something’ about feeding the kids plates full of steaming corporate bullshit.

Betting and pokies firms to lose R&D tax incentives

The government has released draft legislation to strip gambling and tobacco firms from research and development tax concessions from July next year

Tabcorp had an R&D budget of $43.8m in 2022-23, according to the Australian Taxation Office’s latest report on the tax incentive, while pokies businesses Aristocrat Leisure and Ainsworth Game Technology had R&D budget of $19m and $7.9m, respectively.

There would be a carve-out for R&D activities related to harm minimisation

China’s global technology and engineering ascendancy continues
    By Alan Kohler

China now dominates in every technology that defines the modern world.

Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s 2025 Critical Technology Tracker, released last week, China leads in seven out of eight AI categories, 13 out of 13 advanced materials and manufacturing technologies, in all seven categories of defence, space, robotics and transportation, nine out of 10 in energy and environment and five out of nine in biotechnology, genes and vaccine

China’s global technology ascendancy is pretty much total, yet it has only half the number of billionaires as the US and that number grew this year by only half as much, so how is this possible?
