  1. PvO is indulging in one of his favourite pastimes: Newspoll Futures.

There are likely to be booby-traps in the polls for Gillard, such as questions about Rudd. But the delicacy and tentativeness of engineering a Rudd return is such that a small rise in Labor’s primary vote, even of just two percentage points, in the coming two weeks could save the Prime Minister.

Shortly before the 2007 election Andrew Robb recalls that he and others were about to approach John Howard to step aside, because of consistently poor polling. But a small improvement right at that time stopped the approach going ahead.

Gillard hanging on because of a polling blip on the back of voter sympathy would be the worst possible outcome for Labor. It would bind the party to an unpopular leader in an environment where respect for the PM has clearly been lost.

In other words, discount the next Newspoll if it goes up, because it’ll only be a sympathy vote.

As my sister said when I read the above excerpt out to her:

    What’s he talking about? A vote’s a vote.

But Pvo would retort, “Yes, but it’s so far away from the election.

(I know, I’m indulging in PvO Futures now)

But if it’s so far away from the election, then why – when polls are bad – do they forget to mention that bit?

It is still 80-something days from the election. And that’s a fact.

One thing will be certain. If the Newspoll DOES go up, then it’ll be a signal to the Murdoch minions that a good week of clean air and agenda setting CAN help Labor.

It also says that polls are fragile things. Up one fortnight, down the next. In other words: this far out, they’re changeable.

And they do not want us to think about that too much.

  2. seems to me mr PVO knows what the question are

this man is a professor so I have read

  3. Ladies, Gentlemen…..If we sit a moment, hold back the enthusiasm for the fight and contemplate the detritus that is relevant information coming over the “airwaves” for just a moment.
Rest assured, that whatever the OM. are trying to “conjure out of a hat”, it will be so wrong as to make a complete fool (once more..yawn!) of them.
The machinery of the govt’ is already turning to collect and collate facts, details and chatter and movements of all those “players opposite”, so that I strongly suspect that by the last week of parliament, when all this bullshit has built up so high that walking to the top of Mt. Kosciouko (sp?)…will be a stroll downhill, then that play of the card, that was always going to be in the govt’s hand, will lay the guilty cards on the table for all the world to see.
I back this up with the experience of watching the last, many, deft, “Secret Canasta” plays by the PM. She always plays a dead-hand…it’s her manner…In reality, it is Julia Gillard against Rupert Murdoch…..and his
hand is tainted with a fool-joker and a whole bunch of deuces!…Juila Gillard IS THE GOVT’ now, and SHE holds all the aces at the moment.
    Relax, as the message states…sit down, have a drink!…on THAT note, : Bartender…make mine a “Murphy’s”!

  8. msadventure2,
While you are here…have you, or anyone else in Brisbane, tried to track down ‘Sascha Taylor’? Or any of the other staff at Richards and Richards Restaurant for a true account of the Brough Fundraising Dinner Menu?

  9. Jaycee,

In moi’s opinion, it’s a tad early, but if you really want one …

For anyone interested, I prescribe some nice, soothing

    and a slice of

    .

Now, let’s all keep smiling – it makes the enemy wonder what we’re up to 🙂

    .

  10. Denese, I have to go out shortly but you can find me here @MsAdventure2

C@tmomma – I will report back this evening about Sascha Taylor if I can get any more info. As far as I am aware no-one has been able to track down this person.

  11. JG’s scorecard had Sattlers name added this week. How many has she seen off now? Impressive list , losers one and all

  12. It’s pretty clear that ‘Sascha’ was just someone making stuff up. The obvious clue was ‘her’ claim to have just resigned, that very day, months after she allegedly saw the offending menu. Why didn’t she resign on the spot, on the night? To me it all sounded like an attempt to push the ‘it’s all a Labor plot’ thing – have a mysterious someone make a claim, have Joe Richards say he’s never employed anyone by that name, sit back and watch the whole thing crumble away to nothing.

The mention of Sascha reminded me of something I wanted to say the other day, but forgot about until now – the importance of getting your facts straight.Doing that helps avoid eggy faces, for one thing.

    Example one. Pissgate.
When that story broke the original report referred to ‘an LNP’ MP. It was later corrected to ‘a member of the federal opposition’ but not before too many people assumed ‘LNP’ was secret code for ‘Barnaby Joyce’ and gleefully jumped to incorrect conclusions.

Lesson one – always be precise. When referring to the opposition say ‘the opposition’ or ‘the coalition’ because ‘LNP’, strictly speaking, refers to Queensland and you might give people the wrong idea.

    Example two. Menugate.
When that story broke a lot of people Googled ‘Joe Richards’, found the wrong J Richards and furiously tweeted that he was a donor to the Liberal Party, kindly backing up their tweets with links to a newspaper article mentioning ‘JJ Richards’ as a substantial donor. The only problem was it was the wrong Richards. JJ Richards is a large waste management company (I can’t help thinking of Tony Soprano here) which makes political donations.
    http://www.jjrichards.com.au/
JR Richards is another large waste management company, started by a member of the JJ Richards family. It operates in Northern NSW and it too was claimed to be the same Joe Richards.
    http://www.jrrichards.com.au/

Joe Richards sells ties and suits to the gentry and has a cafe bar in his establishment. The only garbage he handles would be ‘joke’ menus.

Lersson two – when in doubt say nothing. No matter how obvious something seems it may not be correct. Check ALL the details before you tweet, or post, or blab.

  13. I think that Liberal sympathizers/supporters Inflate the ‘ we love Kevin Rudd’ poll numbers. And for those who believe Mr. Rudd has changed and grown may I quote his own words this week about Tony Abbott ‘ a leopard doesn’t change its spots’ If It applies to Abbott then equally it applies to Rudd.
Also If Labor switches to Kevin Rudd there is a possibility of enraging/losing female support.

  14. JG’s scorecard had Sattlers name added this week. How many has she seen off now? Impressive list , losers one and all

Sattler was Fairfax, and so was the OTHER sacked shock-jock, Michael Smith, who now huffily resides in his own blog spouting venom and sexist undertones against Gillard (although his main line is Slater & Gordon).

Gillard is good at knocking off Fairfax shocks. You’d think Fairfax would get the message wouldn’t you?

  15. msadventure, consider that the ‘Sascha Taylor’ is most likely a nom de plume but may have been chosen as a play on words.
The R&R Cafe is a sideline of the R&R menswear business – so perhaps the ‘Taylor’ is a reference to ‘tailor’ – or other similar occupational words that are surnames.
Sascha is an alternative to Alexander/Alexandra/Sandy in some language groups.
But then it could also be the name of their grandparent .. or dog 🙂

Whatever the case, the real identity of the person should be protected, unless they voluntarily choose to reveal it. While to us on the sidelines, it’s a matter of curiosity etc, to that person – at the very least – it’s a threat to future employment prospects.

  16. Lesson two – when in doubt say nothing. No matter how obvious something seems it may not be correct. Check ALL the details before you tweet, or post, or blab.

Why should we play fair? The media doesn’t check facts particularly well.

  17. Bushfire Bill,

We should play fair with people who are not themselves “players”. Politicians, media types, and tycoons (of all sizes), on the other hand …

    😈

  18. A lot of pundits, experts, movers and shakers have all questioned why the the PM went on Howard Sattlers show? Why give those such as him airtime and, by default, credibility. Well, the answer is pretty simple;

If you’re fighting engineered and organised hatred you stand up and stare it in the face. You don’t stop staring until it flinches and casts it eyes away. Hatred will always be weaker than courage. One builds, the other corrodes. If you want any proof that Jaycee and BB are right? Apply the word corrosive to Murdoch and his sycophants, which includes Her Majestys loyal opposition, and the treacherous chancers in her own party.

So, what can we do. We passionate observers. To paraphrase Lt Gen Morrison…” we band of brothers and sisters “. Those who will never walk past a standard that we don’t accept. What can we do? We fight!

    We have three weapons.

Our words….they are indeed our swords.

Twitter and the ” Net “……the battleground we have chosen. Newsprint and FTA television aren’t going to cut it.

Communication….the warhorse that carry us, with our swords, to the battleground we have chosen.

I know all of the above sounds a bit ” wankerish ” and silly. But is it?

The frontline enemy are journalists. They broadcast and embellish the hate and the propaganda and are used as dispensable cannon fodder. Fortunately many of them, not being all that bright, have been hit by ” friendly fire ” and they’re shaky. IMO, one strong, unrelenting counter attack by twitter and the ” Net ” while not finishing them would isolate them. Like what they’re trying to do to JGPM.

The journalists are the weak link in all of this because they have sold their principles out, with self respect sealing the bargain. They’re already pissed off with having to defend themselves and have resorted to justifying themselves to each other. The belief they have in their own credibility is shaken..we have to break it. Journalists allude to the fifth estate as white noise. That’s bullshit. They understand to well the power of the internet. Many of them have already been victim of it.

Use twitter and the net, not to insult or ridicule, but to challenge. Journalists are inured to insult and blind to ridicule. Their stock in trade is credibility. Their Achilles heel is being treated with scepticism.

We can beat them and we must beat them.

  19. This last week has certainly made me seriously consider my own attitudes towards women.

I’ve gone through these attitudes and behaviour as honestly as I can, trying to find points where, though well-meaning, I’ve been a total klutz, or where a woman I’ve been talking to might be thinking, “What a sexist jerk!”.

I found plenty of candidate occasions, as I think any man of a certain age would.

I’m not talking about political correctness, but about an absence of thoughtlessness in the way I behave around women.

Women are different to men, and we may thank God for it. Living a life would be a soulless wasteland if the difference, both physical and mental, wasn’t there.

But that’s different to denigration, or even casual habits, not meant to offend at all, that nevertheless can be offensive and can be taken that way, validly so.

It’s a minefield, for sure. And every now and again I confess I personally tread on some big mines.

In trying to be honest with myself I’ve tried to eliminate the ridiculous, after first examining whether what I think is ridiculous is actually so. It’s an ongoing process, one that I fear I’ll never complete.

But the week that has just gone has made me think about my own attitudes towards gender and, in my opinion, that’s a good thing, because I found a few rough edges I’d like to smooth away.

  20. BB
You are a treasure, and I wonder if you are not the only male (and female) doing a bit of self-examination this weekend. I am thinking about a few things myself.

  21. I don,t have to contemplate my shortcomings as I am reminded of them constantly by my OH.
Luckily there is only a few 😀

  22. Regarding Syria, I am very angry with all sides, that the adults cannot solve their problems without killing kids. None of them are right nor coming out of any of this with any honour.

  23. BB , Fiona , Puffy , an Joe……well said . Let ‘ s hope there are quite a few Aussies doing the same this weekend .

  24. As soon as Sascha Taylor story came out I emailed D. Donaldson of IA and DD replied that they were already looking for her. Seeing they have already posted 2 stories on menugate we will have to wait for the bloodhounds to go to work.

  25. Just to let you all know, I rang Ed Husic’s office the day he undermined the PM to let him know what I thought of his actions. I spoke to his media adviser and he made it quite plain that his intention was to get Rudd back in the his rightful job.His line was that Ed was only answering questions,my reply was yes but Ed gets to decide on how to answer. I was then informed that I don’t know how the media works. It was like trying to have a sensible conversation with a demented evangelist. I have had more rational responses from News Ltd hacks.

My parting response to him was that they had to be naive or worse to think that Rudd was the solution because Murdoch already owns Rudd’s nuts.

It was hard to believe that I was talking to a Labor supporter.

  26. liam,
good on you for making that call. That is the difference. I have weighed up the plus and minus of bringing Rudd back and came down on the JG side for various reasons.

It sounds like Husic is at the cultist stage, no sense talking to him.

  27. Liam

Well done for trying to get a reason for his behaviour, disappointing to read the excuses given.

Over the last week there has been some brilliant contributions here and a lot of excellent discussions. Thanks to all. Although I mostly only read the contributions here, last week I couldn’t join in even if I wanted as a frozen shoulder disabled me severely, but is starting to come good after the x-ray person had me in tears of pain with the positioning of my arm: result seems to have loosened it and can now at least dress myself and type again. 🙂

  28. except of course to let them know what you think, and I particularly liked the bit about Satans Servant’s nutcracker habit.

It is one of the reasons I won’t back Rudd, I worry that his soul is in hock to the devil, over a night out on the town.

  29. 2 gravel that’s awful

    well fancy that

  32. Jay Weatherill and Julia speaking English.

Imagine Abbott trying to get through a presser that went for more than four talking points.

  33. Can’t remember if I commented here about last Wednesday’s Freo visit of the PM? Melissa Parke, in response to my urging her to let other Caucus members know about the admiration, affection, and loyalty shown here towards the PM in her appearance with Ben Elton was to say that Caucus does not decide. The big power brokers hadn’t shifted, and meantime Ministers and Members would be just getting on with their jobs unless they heard to the contrary, I imagine if any ALP ‘power brokers’ or their reps were among the PM’s contingent, they wouldn’t be in any doubt about JGPM’s drawing power that evening.

Surely then they’ve devised a strategy for breaking through the stone wall of resistance built by the media? How any journo with a shred of conscience could describe her as hard, I just don’t know. Anyone watching her mingle with the crowd here and then respond to Ben Elton’s questions on stage with wit and good humor, displaying humility too about her overseas meetings with world leaders, without one malicious jibe about Abbott, had to be impressed. As well, who watching just a few sessions of Question Time could honestly report on so called ‘chaos in Canberra’ unless it was to get stuck into Abbott and Coalition chaos?

By the way I think the secret to her calmness might be that lack of malice and refusal to be riled or provoked. So I don’t agree with those who say she should retaliate more often and forcefully – yet. We know she is capable of that, and is probably holding fire until Parliament concludes and the campaign proper begins. But I know from my own experience that if you let the bastards get you down it destroys you and ruins your health and effectiveness.

So, let’s get behind our gutsy PM!

  34. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/patriarchychy (ptr-ärk)
    n. pl. pa·tri·ar·chies In both senses also called patriarchate.
    1. A social system in which the father is the head of the family and men have authority over women and children.

    2. A family, community, or society based on this system or governed by men.

  35. John Murphy, Born 1950 in Dunedoo. How appropriate. John Murphy a wingnut dinosaur non entity, who would really be a lot happier in the DLP.
I used to live in Reid. It must break Tom Uren heart to have this rat representing his old electorate.
